Life is in phases and in stages, and we cannot remain in one phase of life forever, there were times where we were dependent on our parents as a source of our livelihood, that is the phase most of us enjoyed the most.
But as far as growth is a continuous process we ought to grow past certain stages in our life and start to take responsibility for ourselves and other people.
I have lived my life for a long time allowing people to make decisions for me and the results of the decisions will be pushed to another person, i solely depended on the people around me for everything.
Being independent is one of the best feelings in the world, looking around at my life and I realize that I'm self-sufficient and I am a full blown adult. Being an independent young lady entails me to trust myself and my decisions. It means I have the skills and resources to seek out what I need in order to feel fulfilled. When i have healthy independence, I feel confident in my ability to take care of myself through hard and joyful times alike.
I recalled days where I would be monitored, time would be given for me to stay out and when I am returning, moments where I will be told what to do and what not to do, where to go and where not to go, moments where my parents would defend me etc.
The First time I felt truly independent was when I moved out of my parents house to stay alone, I had to face life, and also have in my subconscious mind that I will have to face difficulties, also take some crucial decisions, stand up to defend myself, and face the consequences of my actions be it negatively or positively, that every time will not be a time of plenty, i would learn yo manage my emotions as we as my feelings. A time came in my life where I was faced with a challenge and it requires me to choose, defend myself and be responsible for my decision and actions, bearing the consequences myself, at first it was very difficult, something that i haven't done before, i have to take my time before making that decision because it was the first of its kind, after that day i felt really good knowing that I can stand up for myself no matter the pressure I can still stand with my decision, choose for myself, face the good and bad consequences of my decision, provide for myself, as well as others that was the day I felt independent, I can go wherever I want to go without rushing home to avoid being punished, do whatever i wish to do, but it must be registered in my memory that someone is looking at me, even when my parents are not there, and i will be accountable for my life, and every other activities that i was couldn't do while with my parent, now having the freedom to do them is quiet very exciting.
I felt that age is just a number, but the level of our maturity and independence really depends on the state of our mind and our ability to handle situations wise, take decisions for ourselves, face the consequences of our decision either good or bad, and come out strong with a better understanding of how to handle other difficult tasks or situations.
Things that makes me feel independent
- Leaving home, and taking adult responsibility, taking life tasks like paying bills, filing taxes, providing for myself and others.
- I choose the job which i love and it's able to satisfy my basic needs monetarily.
- My ability to stand up and take responsibility for my actions without being told.
I became independent by making important decisions on my own, which is the key component of being an independent. At first I was scared but I was careful and I feel confident by doing those things, and using careful consideration when I was making big choices. I was always conscious that the best way to make a big decision is to balance what my heart wants with what my mind thinks.
