It is another Olympic year, seems like only last year we had the previous one (2021 actually). Paris, the home of love is the location for this years games that starts on the 26th of July. We may not have Covid to talk about this time around but I doubt any Olympic games can proceed without its fair share of controversy. The most prominent will always go to the sheer cost of staging such an event which is estimated around $9 Billion USD.
Of course such an event also comes with considerable economic benefits which are sometimes ignored. Many sectors (particularly construction) have benefitted over the years from the preparations and many more will benefit during the course of the games. Yet it won't change the tone of critics, who constantly ask us if the games are worth the trouble.
I am and have remained a very strong supporter of the Olympic games. It was a big part of my childhood, especially the games held in both Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). I'd say the Olympics certainly helped grow my love for sports and a sense of pride seeing my heroes and Country-people represent. These days though it seems that the hype around the Olympic games have waned, and am certainly not alone in this feeling. It isn't a function of getting Older either. Something has changed, the World has changed.
Economics aside, the Olympics were more than any monetary value one could offer. There was a strong sense of collective identity that followed, both from Athletes and fans alike. These days it feels different, even though I may be wrong. The Olympics are an entertainment source at best and have become a platform for more individual than collective accomplishments. It isn't entirely out of place, the World has become a lot more superstar tailored and individual focused. I just wonder if the games will survive down the line with its essence rubbed off.
