Despite the hot mess that our football season ended up being, it has been a good year to be a Michigan State fan. In fact, I used to know a guy who came to work pretty much every day and always said "It's a great day to be a Spartan". That's definitely the case this basketball season.
I've been watching with great joy as the Spartans continue to find a way to win. They are the number one team in the Big Ten, the number seven team in the country, and they have been having a historic season starting conference play with 13 straight wins.
I'll talk more about them in a bit though.
On Thursday the 23rd, we had two games in the top twenty five. Only one of them was an upset and that took place in the Big Ten when Maryland took down (17) Illinois 91 to 70. That's a tough loss for a good team who only fell to MSU by two points.
Friday there were once again only two games in the top 25 and neither of those was an upset. I do have to say though that I was really excited to see Michigan get hammered by Purdue 91 to 64. So awesome!
On Saturday there were fourteen games in the top 25. South Carolina took (14) Mississippi State into overtime, but fell short 65 to 60. (8) Michigan State headed out to New York to play Rutgers at Madison Square Garden and they came away with a 81 to 74 win.
Vanderbilt had a big upset over (9) Kentucky 74 to 69, it was a really good game, I had a chance to watch the end of it. This has been a pretty decent year for the Commodores over all. Texas continued the upsets with a tumbling of (13) Texas A&M 70 to 69.
Meanwhile, back in the Big Ten, Minnesota had a huge upset win over (15) Oregon 77 to 69. (22) Missouri also had a big upset win over (16) Ole Miss 83 to 75.
That's a lot of upsets in one day, but we still aren't finished!
Kansas State took down (23) West Virginia 73 to 60, and Xavier toppled (19) UConn 76 to 72. The (1) Auburn vs. (6) Tennessee game was a defensive showdown with Auburn coming out on top 53 to 51.
On Sunday there were only four games in the top 25. None of them were upsets from what I can see. It's hard to tell because either Oklahoma State or Texas Tech fell out of the top 25 and ended up being listed in this batch.
On Monday there were two games in the top 25 and Arizona had a big upset win over (3) Iowa State in overtime 86 to 75.
Tuesday we were blessed with seven games in the top 25. (12) Kentucky bounced back from their loss to Vandy beating (8) Tennessee 78 to 73. Michigan State moved up to (7) and had a nice home win over Minnesota 73 to 51.
Wednesday brought us another seven games in the top 25. Maryland had an upset over (17) Wisconsin in the Big Ten 76 to 68. That was the only upset of the night.
Tonight we get to see if (18) Illinois can rebound from their recent losses with a road game against Nebraska. Meanwhile Michigan State isn't back in action until Saturday against USC.
Michigan State has a tough road ahead of them with games upcoming against USC, UCLA, and Oregon as they make a circuit of the west coast. I hope they can continue to see success and grow as a team. I actually don't mind a loss on this trip though it would still make me sad. I just hope they have a good night when they find themselves facing U of M.
