Tales of the Urban Explorer: Cannon Brewery

in voilk •  3 months ago

"Cannon Brewery" had turned into my Sheffield nemesis; twice before it had halted my progress, courtesy of a hole-less large fence being the primary obstacle.

The Brewery was closed in 1999 and has become a local eyesore. My occasional collaborative explorer @lpff has dug up some history that can be found on his explore way before mine in 2020.

A year ago, it was supposed to be open, and yet it wasn't. It's not considered a spectacular exploration, more of a staple for anyone visiting the City of Steel, Sheffield, and some fucker keeps sealing it up, just before my arrival.

Today was going to be different. Having failed twice before I was more than aware of the entrance point (if it was to exist), and exist it did. We pulled back a palaside metal bar and entered a short jungle with a well-worn path before entering a rain-sodden large yard.

    37_IMG_8359_37.jpg

While it looks nice and dry, I was more interested in getting inside than panoramic views of a sodden yard. They would come later from a much higher viewpoint.

Once the grounds had been breached, the buildings were a synch with multiple access points to be found. I was interested in the art being Sheffield and what I could find.

It didn't take long, though this poor dear looked like she was suffering from a cold, and I didn't bring any Lemsip along, oh well….

    4_IMG_8313_4.jpg

I figured it would be better adorned with fantastic art than what I was seeing. Where was it all?

    5_IMG_8314_5.jpg

And where was this ‘Pig and Whistle?’ I read it was an internal public house to service both staff and visitors. Could it be the workers were continually pissed while brewing up the ale?

    6_IMG_8315_6.jpg

The spiral staircase was metal, sturdy, and usable. We both went up in search of more interesting crap than we were currently seeing.

    7_IMG_8316_7.jpg

It was a little better though some of the graffiti was old and others, were simply shit and scrawls of writing.

This was better, and the lady with the bare tits behind had a familiar style to it. I do know the styles of a couple of artists in this area, such are their unique designs.

A lovely old factory, built of stone and not likely to kill us while casually walking to and fro.

There's no doubt in my mind the black and white image right of the pig and closest window is a Coloquix. While not of Banksy quality, I do love seeing these dotted about the city and surrounding areas.

    13_IMG_8333_13.jpg

There’s another Coloquix through the window, but the duck had my attention, even though some wanker has tried to deface it.

The eye is looking at you.

    15_IMG_8335_15.jpg

Getting to the top of 'Cannon Brewery' is easy and offers some great shots of the city and beyond.

    16_IMG_8336_16.jpg

… as well as all that water I mentioned before. From this vantage point, it was easier to explain what we had to walk over or around to get from one side to another.

    17_IMG_8337_17.jpg

    @anidiotexplores in a customary pose.

    18_IMG_8338_18.jpg

    19_IMG_8339_19.jpg

Yes, we did go up there, well kind of halfway. Thank fuck for the metal stairways.

    20_IMG_8340_20.jpg

On this rooftop area, it was just as wet, and not to mention slippery. If you are not walking in water, then you are treading on that green slimy shit and attempting not to fall over.

    21_IMG_8341_21.jpg

The Queen was just about dead and someone was not a fan. A little unjust I would say. I am not a royalist but she was a solemn stalwart monarch who never had a smutty reputation.

    22_IMG_8342_22.jpg

He seemed to get in my shots more than usual today; bloody poser.

    23_IMG_8343_23.jpg

I couldn't wait to drench my shoes in all that shite, and certain areas of the Brewery passed on due to too much water being in the way.

    24_IMG_8344_24.jpg

Is this beer-related, it doesn't look like it to me.

    25_IMG_8345_25.jpg

‘God Hates Fags’… how very American? The word here means something completely different.

    26_IMG_8346_26.jpg

This reminds me of the plasma weapon from Doom, that’s the one a little worse than the BFG.

    27_IMG_8347_27.jpg

In the basement lives bricks, lots of bricks.

    28_IMG_8348_28.jpg

Getting lost in "Cannon Brewery" was relatively simple. There were lots of twists, turns, and small metal staircases leading to different areas.

    29_IMG_8349_29.jpg

Corridors such as this one, long and graffiti-laden were a ubiquitous sight.

    30_IMG_8350_30.jpg

To see everything one had to exit a building, do a little external walking, and enter it again further down.

    31_IMG_8351_31.jpg

Art was everywhere and in most of it those signatures that looked great, but were barely legible.

    32_IMG_8352_32.jpg

This seems to be a 'famous' shot within "Cannon Brewery" that everyone wants to take. I suppose it used to hold something and was stabilized by those rusting metal rods that are now sticking up.

    33_IMG_8354_33.jpg

‘Keos’ the artist needs a little tutoring. The writing is very legible, which speaks of inexperience. The more scrawly and illegible, the more street credibility the spray painter has.

    34_IMG_8355_34.jpg

A rare piece of machinery; did it produce pints of beer once?

    35_IMG_8356_35.jpg

These types of stairs were abundant, all very solid, and all very full of graffiti.

We left "Canon Brewery" feeling quite satisfied. Another notch on the bedpost was scratched off.
