Meet Mostazo y Hotdoga. Little kids invent the most fabulous names. These pups received their names from D, my friend of 6 years old. If you are not a native spanish speaker like him, you may not catch the cleverness of the fact that “Mostaza” which means mustard in english is traditionally, a feminine word. Likewise, to hotdog he added an “a” to make it into a feminine name. Tricksy D, named them thusly because the male puppy has a slightly more mustardy toned fur and the girlpup is long and slender.
Te presento Mostazo y Hotdoga. Los niños pequeños inventan los nombres más fabulosos. Estos cachorros recibieron sus nombres de D, mi amigo de 6 años. Si no eres un hablante nativo de español como él, es posible que no te des cuenta del astucia de que “Mostaza”, que se llama "mustard" en inglés, es tradicionalmente una palabra femenina. Asimismo, al hot dog le añadió una “a” para convertirlo en un nombre femenino. Tricksy D, los nombró así porque el cachorro macho tiene un pelaje de un tono ligeramente más parecido a mostaza y la hembra es larga y delgada.
They were found by another little boy, abandoned in a cardboard box on a beach. He found six puppies in total and brought them home to his mother. They were so young, still deaf and nearly blind, with no teeth. One of them did not survive the first night. Three others were adopted the next day. With these two babies remaining in her care, needing to eat every few hours, the woman became desperate. She knew that she could not leave them alone all day while she was at work.

Angelita is the Mamá of Tricksy D. And I was his nanny, at home with him during the day and therefore available for baby puppy care all day as well. When Angelita showed me the post asking for somebody to care for the two puppies, we both knew that we would take them on. After bringing them home and serving them some food we quickly realized that they were younger than we had been told. The previous carer had said they could eat moistened kibble but we found that while Hoti could suck up and swallow some, Mostazo was barely getting any food into his mouth at all. He was smaller than her, weak and very skinny.

We had one of D’s old baby bottles which did not work very well, but it worked well enough to get Mostazo bigger than Hoti, in less than a week. They both drank warm homemade puppy formula every three hours, drenching me simultaneously and were dewormed and vaccinated as soon as they were old enough. They woke me up to clean up after them and simply for reassuring hugs and kisses many many times per night. Eventually I put my mattress on the floor, so that they could snuggle up. After about two months, I could sleep through the night again.
