I welcome everyone to my first post in the CineTV community. I have gone through so many people’s posts and i see how good they are. I am a lover of Will smith movies and so i will be doing a review on one of his movies.
After Earth is a (2013) Sci-fi movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Will Smith and Jaden Smith, his son starred in this awesome Sci-if movie. And though some people feel it didn't live up to its potential, personally it remains one of my best favourite Duo movies because firstly, I love the actor, Will Smith and secondly because it is a Sci-fi movie, a genre that happens to be my favourites.
Plot Overview;
After Earth has been abandoned for so many years, a young boy, (Jaden Smith) whose name was Kitai Raige sets out to find a beacon to save his father (Will Smith) also known as Cypher Raige who was dying from doom.
Earth was a paradise before it was destroyed, now humans have to find another place to settle upon and they called their new home "Nova Prime". But Nova Prime was already occupied by aliens, which means they have to fight to be able to takeover.
Will smith in this movie was a decorated warrior who was the only soldier to be able to "Ghost" (someone who fought in a war in the past and lost their fear in battle and now is able to fight without fear which enables him to be invisible to aliens who feed on fear).
Kitai has always looked up to his father as a young trainer to be ranger someday . And one day, they go on a voyage for a training together and their aircraft ends up being hit by asteroid shower. They had to do an emergency landing on a place closer to them and suitable for humans, which was Earth.
Earth has been abandoned for a thousand years and now occupied by violent creatures that would want to kill as soon as they set their eyes on one. Their aircraft is crashed and now Cypher is injured, other passengers on board are dead, and his son has to go into the wild to retrieve a beacon to help establish a connection between them and their settlement in Prime Nova which is way way across the edge of the universe. Part of the aircraft was still functioning and had the control room, Cypher has to watch Kitai embark on the journey alone but guiding him remotely. Kitai was given a weapon and oxygen capsules to help him breathe in earth’s low oxygen atmosphere.
Because earth has been abandoned for a long time, it now has violent atmosphere shifts whereby the nights are extremely cold, Kitai has to look for shelter in a hot spot to keep him warm. In the process of the journey, creatures approaches Kitai which wanted to attack him but Cypher sees them from the control room and warns him to stay still. Because of fear, he attacks and now attracts more of them, they Chase him. Cypher gives him a direction of an escape route from them. In the process, some of his oxygen capsules were destroyed and now he has to reach his destination as quickly as possible.
Kitai could not tell his father that some of his oxygen capsules were destroyed, because that will make his father to ask him to return back, instead he lied about it when his father asked him if everything was okay. Further into the journey and about to cross a tall water fall to get to his destination, his father discovered that Kitai's oxygen capsules were almost exhausted but he tried to convince his father that he can finish the mission because his father told him to abort.
He argues with his father that he is not a coward and in the moment of rage, he jumps off and glides using his suit to direct himself. About to make it to the other side, a large bird attacks him and breaks his communicator and now he can’t reach his father. Fortunately for Kitai, he was able to escape but since he can’t communicate with his dad for direction, he has to rely on his memory to reach the destination, to retrieve the beacon. Finally he reached his destination and retrieved the beacon with which he is able to send signals to the rescue team. They were finally able to get home.
I love that the father-son survived the journey, I love Kitai's courage and how they both bonded in the movie, showing that a real life relationship existed between them, the visuals is lush and very pleasing to the eye
I would rate it a 90/100.
You can watch it on Netflix or Max.
