You're driving in your car. The radio is on and a song comes on that literally captivates you. You've never heard it before, and you can't put a name to the singer's voice. One look at the advert clarifies things. Only to the extent that you now know the name — but at the same time you wonder why you have never heard of this artist?
Du fährst im Auto, das Radio ist eingeschaltet und ein Song zieht dich förmlich in seinen Bann. Noch nie zuvor gehört und die Stimme der Sängerin oder des Sängers ist spontan nicht einem Namen zuzuordnen. Der Blick auf die Anzeige bringt Klarheit. Aber nur insofern, als du jetzt den Namen kennst – aber du dich auch gleichzeitig fragst, wieso du noch zuvor nie von diesem Künstler gehört hast?
This is undoubtedly what happened to me when I was confronted with the name Kat Eaton for the first time. A stunning voice, and I don't know enough about the person who had captured my attention in such a way. Born in Cardiff, brought up in Sheffield, 31 years old and now living in London. Not exactly a lot to go on. But at least it's something to get started with. The first thing I found out is that Kat Eaton is a lot better known in the Netherlands than she is in her country of origin.
So ist es mir widerfahren, als ich erstmals mit dem Namen Kat Eaton konfrontiert wurde. Eine umwerfende Stimme und ich weiß nicht genug davon, wer meine Aufmerksamkeit dermaßen in Anspruch genommen hatte. Geboren in Cardiff, aufgewachsen in Sheffield, 31 Jahre alt und nun in London lebend. Nicht gerade viel. Aber zumindest ein Anfang. Das Erste, was ich herausfinde, ist, dass Kat Eaton in den Niederlanden weitaus bekannter als in ihrer Heimat ist.
The comment of a cameraman from an English music station who recorded the sold-out concert at “The Garage” in London was apt: “I think I've just recorded the performance of the year. There's a voice that's a combination of jazz and blues in a way I've rarely heard before.”
This man is talking about Kat Eaton and her great guitarist, producer and husband, Nick Atkinson.
Dazu passend der Kommentar eines Kameramannes eines englischen Musikkanals, der das ausverkaufte Konzert im »The Garage« in London aufzeichnete: “Ich glaube gerade den Gig des Jahres aufgezeichnet zu haben. Da ist eine Stimme, die Jazz und Blues dermaßen hörenswert vereint, wie ich es bisher nur selten zuvor gehört habe.“

She herself describes her voice as being her “most important instrument”. However, she also knows how to play the piano and the guitar. She first became aware of the impact of her vocal charisma when her fellow singers in the choir turned to her in amazement as she brought her “instrument” into the room. The remarkable thing is: Kat Eaton deliberately sought refuge in the choir because she was so unsure of herself.

Das Bemerkenswerte daran - dass Kat Eaton ganz bewusst den Unterschlupf im Chor suchte, da sie ihrer selbst so unsicher war.
She first started writing her own songs aged 12, having been so impressed by someone called Janis Joplin. But it wasn't until 2014 that she was provided the opportunity to record “Ont Sofa Recor's” during a session at a studio in Sheffield. But it was only with the release of 'The Joker' that things really took off and Kat Eaton's name became instantly recognisable in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Mit 12 begann sie erstmals sich eigene Lieder auszudenken, da sie so dermaßen beeindruckt vom Tonaufnahmen einer gewissen Janis Joplin war. Doch dauerte es bis ins Jahr 2014, als sie endlich die Gelegenheit geboten wurde, den Song »Ont Sofa Recor’s« während einer Session in einem Studio in Sheffield aufzunehmen. Doch so richtig in die Gänge kam die Sache erst mit der Veröffentlichung von »The Joker«, der den Namen Kat Eaton in den Niederlanden und Belgien schlagartig bekannt machte.
In response to a question about how she actually rates her music in terms of style, the artist said: “If you like the music of Amy Winehouse, John Mayer and Little Feat, then you might be in my league. I try to sum it up that way — jazz with down-to-earth natural ingredients.”
Finally, Kat Eaton's answer to the question of what makes her particularly happy was quite succinct: “When I finally hear one of our songs on the radio.
This probably sums up everything that makes up the small difference between the known and the unknown.
Auf die Frage, wie sie ihre Musik bezüglich der Stilrichtung eigentlich einschätze, antwortete die Künstlerin so: »Wenn dir die Musik von Amy Winehouse, John Mayer und Little Feat gefällt, dann könntest du bei mir an der richtigen Stelle sein.« Ich versuche es auf diesen Nenner zu bringen - Jazz mit bodenständigen Zutaten aus der Natur.
Zum Abschluss noch die Antwort auf die Frage, was sie denn besonders erfreue, meinte Kat Eaton ganz lapidar: »Wenn ich endlich mal eines von unseren Liedern im Radio hören kann.«
Das drückt wohl all das aus, worin sich der kleine Unterschied zwischen bekannt und unbekannt bemerkbar macht.
