Getting Close With That Ranged Damage

    Close Range

    Ranged attacks may be used in the first position in battles.

    You can use high HP or high speed Ranged monsters at position 2 (or even at position 1 if it has Heal). Choose summoners that give a bonus to Ranged attack or to speed and then choose high damage Ranged attack monsters. Beware of the possibility that your opponent might pick Lir Deepswimmer as summoner or monsters with Return Fire. High HP and Heal is the way to go in this ruleset.

    Reverse Speed

    Monsters with the lowest Speed attack first and have the highest chance of evading attacks.

    Try to pick monsters with 1 speed because they have the best chance of evading Melee and Ranged attacks. Beware of monsters with Enrage and Last Stand, these abilities increase speed when activated

    Lineups

    General Sloan

    Using the Close Range ruleset, I wanted to increase the damage my lineup could dish out. With this in mind, General Sloan made sense to increase ranged damage. Ideally, I want to keep my ranged attackers out of the way where possible and try to focus all damage on a pretty strong and hardy tank.

    Uriel The Purifier

    At second level, Uriel The Purifier gains Self-Heal which is a great ability as it improves the longevity of the tank which is really helpful as it allows the Recharge ability to charge up before striking for a powerful nine damage in a single melee strike. With good armour, Flying and 11 health, I think this is a good selection for the tank, even if the 11 mana is quite a significant chunk of mana from the pool.

    Gargoya Devil

    I really like the Gargoya Devil as it has the Close Range ability alongside the Deathblow. Whilst Close Range will not impact this battle as all monsters will be granted this ability, the three base damage increased to four combined with the Flying make this a great card choice.

    Portal Spinner

    I am not sure I would select this card every time but two base damage with that little bit of armour should help keep this card alive for longer.

    Supply Runner

    Typically this is a great choice, with the Swiftness ability. However this selection is a grave error on my part as with the ruleset Reverse Speed, I am gifting the initiative to the opposing team which is the exact opposite of what I needed to happen in this battle. Other wise a good card and one I'd use in any other ruleset for Close Range. A grave mistake that secures a loss?

    Pelacor Arbalest

    A good rapid fire attacker with the Double Strike ability. I am yet to increase this card's level to fourth as it does not gain beyond a single health addition. In combination with General Sloan the Pelacor Arbalest will do three damage per hit, twice per round. At two speed it is also slow so should take advantage of being more accurate than usual. A good choice in my book.

    Prismologist

    This is a big hitter. With the Blast ability and only two speed the Prismologist should do some good damage to my opponent's lineup. Combined with General Sloan, the Prismologist should be looking at anywhere between four to eight damage depending on the target on the opposing lineup.

    With Close Range, I am unsurprised to see the opponent working toward a similar strategy of utilising big hitting ranged attacks up close. As this is a third level summoner, some of the fourth level Rare and Third level Epic cards will be unavailable to them.

    Imperial Knight

    With Void Armour, the Imperial Knight will be a sturdy foe that will be a challenge to break down. I would expect to see a form of Repair or Heal behind it make this a bigger challenge to break through. An excellent choice by the opponent here.

    Runemancer Attuat

    This is a fantastic choice as Runemancer Atuat has Headwinds which is an ability not often seen. Headwinds reduces the opposing lineup's ranged damage by one so as a result of this card, my Summoner General Sloan is effectively negated. An excellent choice up against my ranged lineup.

    Adelade Brightwing

    Here is the Repair I predicted earlier. With this repair, the opposing tank, Imperial Knight will be a much more formiddable foe. In the Reverse Speed ruleset, Adelade Brightwing will now utilise the Flying and one speed to be a real nightmare to hit and with the Repair ability, she will repair the armour of Imperial Knight immediately. A great choice.

    Venari Crystalsmith

    A healer - this spells trouble. So not only now will I have to penetrate the Void armour of Imperial Knight, it will get repaired by Adelade Brightwing and then any damage which does pass through will then need to beat away the healing of Venari Crystalsmith... Another excellent choice.

    Prismologist

    I think this is an excellent choice for the exact same reasons I selected the cards I did. At a lower level than my own so while my own has a third armour point, I do not expect it to impact the outcome of the battle.

    Pelacor Arbalest

    An excellent choice with the added benefit of being a Gold Foil so an additional ten percent will be added to the inevitable victory for this battle.

    Round 1

    The Void armour is doing a great job of soaking up the damage from my lineup and the added benefit of that armour being so much more sturdy than that of Uriel The Purifier's is quite clear in the first round. Also Adelade Brightwing's speed and Flying ability are are on display with a well timed dodge against what could have been a big hit from Portal Spinner who was attempting to take out one of the more well selected opposing cards.

    Having finally penetrated the Void Armour my lineup's defenses are almost fully depleted. The opposing lineup is still standing strong. Despite the casualty of the Imperial Knight.

    Final Rounds

    A forgone conclusion by this point. A deserved victory for the opponent.

    Lessons Learned

    • A really strong selection by the opponent with Void Armour, Repair and Heal supporting effectively from behind.
    • The opponent used a variety of damage types which benefitted from the ruleset but also added a set of very supportive skills.
    • Debuffing opposing lineups has equal importance to buffing your own damage and skills.
