We all look like our parents, this is one of the rules of genetics that can’t be disobeyed. After all, since we come from our parents, they have to pass down some similar traits as well. That way, we’d be a blend of both our moms and dads and go on to become our person. Since no one fell from the sky, we all have one thing or the other that we got from them by no sheer act of ours.

This is the reason why it’s likely that if two people in the medical field get married, they’d most likely have children who are interested in the medical field as well. It can run in the lineage for a few generations until one black sheep decides he wants to be a musician or YouTuber, leaving the medical life behind.

But then, many of these traits are not “passed” down per se. I believe that we as children just gravitate towards them simply because it’s what our parents do. When your Dad is a doctor, you’ll always be surrounded by medical things and hearing medical stories. If your Dad is a great doctor, people will always be telling you how he saved their lives, and how he saved the chicken’s dog from dying from a stroke while under the rain. Just kidding… but you get the point, huh?

Well, for me, I definitely got a few personality traits from my parents. Traits that when I see them in myself, I know for a fact that yes, that’s from my parents!

From my Dad, one thing I’m sure I got is levelheadedness. My Dad has to be the calmest person I know, no matter how bad things get, he rarely loses his temper. The building could be on fire and he’ll calmly be in it, plotting out how to quench it. That’s my Dad for you, and I got that from him.

I’ve noticed that about myself. When others are panicking about something, I end up not being too terrified. If things don’t go the way I plan, I can easily sit back and try to figure out what I did wrong. I don’t lose my head at all. And then, this trait also comes in handy when I work. The definition of “works well under pressure” is me. Deadlines and work pressure are something I can get pretty good at.

There was a time last year, during the time I was writing my first book, I was working for up to three clients at the same time. And since it’s all writing, it was really stressful. Besides writing for them all, I still had to make blog posts and do my other Hive duties, I still had to write my own book, and I still had to go to class! There were not enough hours in the day for me but somehow, I managed to make it work. I was able to do every single thing within the set deadline.

I’m the king of planning things out. I just tell myself that after doing this, I do that and then I do that one. It gives me a vision for what to do and following it always works out well for me. All that is courtesy of my Dad.

And for my Mom, one thing I got from her is doggedness. My Mom has to be one of the most stubborn people I know. She literally “no dae gree for anybody!*And then, when she says she would do something, know that she would do it. Even though at the time there may not seem to be a way for that to happen. But somehow, she always makes it work. Once she sets her mind to it, it always works out.

And that’s me. Once I put my mind to something, I found out that nothing could stop me. Sometimes, I tell myself that I want to do something, but I can’t even see the way forward and I don’t even know how I’d go about it. But all I know is that I will do it. It always gets done. It might take longer than expected, but it will always happen. And that is a special thanks to my Mom.

For me, I guess having both of these characters from my parents makes me enjoy the best of both worlds. I don’t worry much when things don’t go my way, I instead look for how to make sure it gets better. I’m not one to whine and cry about things I don’t have or how things are messed up, I’m talking solutions and planning ways to get better. That’s me for you. And I have my parents to thank for that.

No one fell from the sky, thank God for that. So, while birthing us, we picked up one or two things from our parents. And when we have our own kids, we’ll also leave a thing or two for them. Please, let’s make sure we leave them the good kind of things, okay?
