The bee-eater is neither a rare bird nor endangered in our area. On the other hand, seeing one in the wild is not all that common. The bee-eaters have specific requirements for nesting. It needs clay or clay-sand banks in which it digs its nesting burrows.
I'm lucky enough to have two sites near my town where bee-eaters nest. And one of them is even easily accessible on foot. So I decided to get out of bed unusually early on Saturday and go out to see the birds.

Vlha u nás není ani vzácný pták a ani ohrožený. Na druhou stranu, potkat ho v přírodě není až tak obvyklé. Vlha má totiž specifické požadavky na hnízdění. Potřebuje hlinité nebo hlinito-písčité břehy, do kterých si vyhrabává hnízdící nory.
Mám to štěstí, že v blízkosti mého města jsou dvě lokality, kde vlhy hnízdí. A jedna z nich je dokonce snadno dosažitelná i pěšky. Tak jsem se rozhodl, že v sobotu vstanu z postele nezvykle brzy a vyjdu si na ptáky.

Besides me there was one photographer and two young people, probably students, who went to the nature to revise some questions for their final exams. And a few cyclists stopped there for a while. Actually, it's quite a busy place. But the birds must be used to it, because they didn't seem to be disturbed by the presence of people.

Kromě mě tam byl ještě jeden fotograf a dva mladí lidé, zřejmě studenti, kteří si zašli do přírody zopakovat nějaké otázky k maturitě. A ještě se tam na chvilku zastavilo pár cyklistů. Vlastně je to docela navštěvované místo. Ale ptáci jsou asi zvyklí, protože vypadali, že je přítomnost lidí nijak neruší.
