FINANCIAL PRUDENCE: CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS WITHOUT TEARS.

I happen to come from a place where the celebration of Christmas is a big event for virtually all families. Every resource the family has made in the course of the year is spent on Christmas day. It's usually a big event where food is cooked and animals are slaughtered and many other activities are done to mark the day. This has become strenuous to families who cannot afford the luxury of keeping up with the financial burden of the period hence propelling them to engage in some nefarious lifestyle to gratify the standard of the society.

However, not everyone has come to this understanding that nothing is so special about the season especially when you are not financially buoyant and what could not be done during Christmas can as well be done every other time.

Recently, I have been living on a tight budget, as a result of the financial burden and responsibility of the family. I decided to be prudent in spending. This year's Christmas I decided to mark it specially and unusually. No cooking of special meals, no visitation, no buying of attires. I just locked myself in and slept. Though I had some calls from friends to hang out, I declined those calls because any attempt to step out of the house would result in spending money.

January, according to some people, is the longest month, especially for salary earners who happen to get their salaries at the end of the month, hence, spending all your resources in December is an unwise decision anyone could make. In a few days, a new year will usher in and so many financial responsibilities will continue. Issue of accommodations, school fees, feeding and making other financial burdens. Hence, it requires financial prudence in this period to be able to undertake the responsibilities that lie ahead.

Christmas however, can be celebrated without breaking the bank. It is all about being satisfied with whatever one has. You do not need to spend enough with the little resources at your disposal, you can afford yourself and your family special treatment. On the other hand, if the resources aren't available, it is not wise to borrow to celebrate Christmas.

It is a fact that after the Christmas season, so many people will be financially bankrupt, some will start borrowing to survive while others will be clueless about how to go about life. These categories of people were the ones who were financially reckless during Christmas, forgetting that life continues after this season.

Besides the Christmas season, the end of the year should be a period whereby people reflect on how the year went. Connecting all the dots and strategizing on a new modus operandi for the coming year. Many people will still repeat the mistake of this year in a new year hence, expecting a different result. A wise decision is working towards addressing the lapses that led to a fall, so that such won't repeat itself.

On the whole, you can celebrate this season without tears.
