I have always enjoy going to beautiful places, one of the most beautiful places I ever experienced was Aliwagwag Falls. Located in Cateel, Davao Oriental, this waterfall is not just something you see; it is a work of art sculpted by nature. Special because of the appearance of a giant stair made of running water. It has 130 tiers and is the tallest waterfall in the Philippines. On my way to the Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park, I was all giddy because I was about to see something so majestic.

Bright eyes and a smile, I stepped into the eco-park, soaking up the natural beauty of the place. The air was fresh, crisp, and the sound of water cascading down rocks was music to my ears. It was tranquil, almost as if nature was inviting me into its dwelling. All around me, there was green—the trees provided tall, lush bushes, untouched by the din of the city. It was like stepping into a postcard.” The falls were majestic upon first sight. For a moment I took it all in, in disbelief that the beauty in front of me could be real.

The falls were beautiful to behold themselves. The water flowed evenly but forcefully over the rocks, leaving dozens of tiny pools behind. The glittering water pouring down the various stages was hypnotizing. I kept staring because it all looked so natural and perfect. It was peaceful — the sound of water, the sound of a gentle thudding that chased away any worry I had. It was one of those rare times when everything around you feels like magic. Despite having seen photos of Aliwagwag Falls previously, there was no way to prepare for its awesome beauty firsthand.

Walking through the hanging bridge near the falls is one of the highlights during my visit. Initially, I was a bit nervous because the bridge swayed a bit under my weight, but it made for an adventure. From the middle of the bridge, I could see the rushing water below me, and I was able to view the falls at a new angle. The view from up there was amazing. I could see the water swirling around through the rocks as it went down, and the surrounding lush forest was a bonus. This was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, waterfalls and greenery, making the perfect shot ever!

My favorite part about Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park is how clean and well taken care of the whole area was. The park staff was doing its best to maintain order to the new normal, and it showed throughout the park. There were places where visitors could sit and enjoy the view. Safety reminders also applied, and there were no tripping hazards, so we felt free to explore without a fear of getting lost or falling. It was impressive that they managed to maintain the park without losing its natural beauty. It’s not often you discover a place where nature and tourism are so entwined.

Naturally, no trip to Aliwagwag Falls is complete without getting into the cool, fresh water. I didn’t swim, but I did sit out at the water’s edge and have the coolness of the stream puddle around my feet. It felt so relaxing. The little pools formed by the falling water seemed inviting, and there were families and friends having fun there, splashing, taking pictures. Seeing people back out in nature and enjoying life in the wilderness was so much fun.

What heightened the beauty of Aliwagwag Falls for me was the tranquility all around. Even though it is a very touristic place, it never seemed crowded nor loud. Instead, it provided an opportunity to unplug from the hustle and bustle of life and simply be in the moment. I was reminded of how so many of us take for granted the simple, yet miraculous things in life. Aliwagwag Falls, however, was a wonderful reminder to slow down and smell the roses — beauty is here and there!

Aliwagwag Falls is more than a destination for me, it’s an experience that recharged me and left me feeling inspired. It’s where you go to rediscover nature, seek serenity and gather memories you’ll never forget. A place meant for adventure-seeking travelers as well as those who only need a quiet escape, Aliwagwag Falls has something in store for you. I feel very thankful that I got the opportunity to go, and that it’s a place I will always have in my heart.

So when you're visiting Davao Oriental, don’t forget to check out Aliwagwag Falls yourself. But it is more than simply a place to be nosy — it is a blessing from Mother Nature that is a reminder of just how wonderful and precious our planet is.
