Growing up as a child, I was always fascinated when I saw kids who had bicycles; it felt cool to me. I grew up in an environment where kids liked to brag about their toys that their parents had gotten for them, but this wasn't the case for me, as I had only a few toys, and as I grew up, I lost interest in some of those toys and wanted new ones.
One of my greatest desires as a child was to own a bike. Now I told my dad about it, but I didn't get any response. Once in a while, my dad would ask what we needed during some special occasions like Christmas, New Year's on our birthday days, and some other really very special occasions.
My desire to get a bicycle made me try everything within my power to please my dad and mom so that when ever it was time for those special occasions I would request for a bike, but all effort proved abortive as my dad never yielded to the request of getting me a bike, but I wasn't going to give up very easily. You would agree with me that repetition is the mother of lasting impression, so I kept requesting until one time my dad promised that if I was among the top 5 in my class, he would get me the bike.
Now I wasn't the brightest student in class, as my results were always between 6th and 10th position out of about 30 kids in my class. It was a very big challenge for me, but I was ready to face the challenge head-on, and as if my dad knew it, he opted to get me a home lesson tutor. I wasn't so happy with this engagement because it deprived me of spending time with my siblings and neighbors after school hours, but because I had a goal of getting a bike like some of my friends, I had to pay the price.
Back then I would close from school by 1:30pm, and by 3pm my extra lesson tutor would be at my place, and she would take me till about 5pm every day except for Saturday and Sunday. I realize that I became better for it as I came in 4th position in class that term, and then it was time for my dad to fulfill his promise.
On the day we collected our report cards, I was so excited I ate my dinner with so much enthusiasm, waiting for dad to return from work. Unfortunately for me, that evening our family designer came to take my measurements and those of my siblings so as to make new clothes for an upcoming event. She decided to stay back for reasons I still don't know and was having a chat with my mom.
When Dad asked for my result and I brought it to him, he was excited too because I was able to break into the top 5 in my class. He took me up, and I sat down on his lap, and he asked again what I wanted.
If I had known, I would have waited, but I was too excited and told my dad how that I wanted a bike, and as soon as I said that, our family designer paused within her words to my mom; her next words were, Are you really going to buy him a bike after telling a story of how some kids have lost their teeth due to bike accidents? She added that I would suddenly turn the bike into a money-making channel, as she listed examples of how her own kids, who obviously knew how to ride a bike, would go and rent a bike that they used to patrol the area, taking turns and making them not to do their house chores and assignments.
This made my dad to change his mind and asked me to request something else and and no matter how I tried to convince him about getting the bike that I never got it
Was there something you wanted as a child and never got? Let me know in the comments.
