Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Vibes Community. My name is Jasper, and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 2 of the Vibes Web3 Music Competition!
The song that I’m singing this week is an original song I wrote, an angry blues song called “Who’s Been Messing with my Baby?”
There are a few things that are technically interesting about the song. The one is that my guitar is not in standard tuning (EADGBe) but rather in DADGAD. I learnt about DADGAD tuning from a band that were making traditional Irish/Celtic music, but since I’ve learned about it I have realised I can write rock songs with it, or even a bluesy song like this one!
Another interesting thing is that its one of the original songs that I play harmonica on. In order to play harmonica at the same time as guitar I use a rack similar to how Bob Dylan and Neil Young used to do it… my parents were big fans of those old timers from the 1960’s and 1970’s, so I grew up listening to a lot of their music!
The interesting thing about this song from an emotional point of view is it’s very unusual to see me act like the character I portray in the song who cannot control his anger! I am actually quite a shy, quiet and subdued person, which means I usually bottle up my emotions! Thank Goodness I have my songs and a few other therapeutic means (like the Mankind Project) to be able to release and really feel the emotions sometimes!
