Technology has made human life easier in many ways and that cannot be overemphasized. The rate at which the advancement in technology made the impossible possible cannot be underrated. Although, at times, we tend to say technology has impacted some parts of human life negatively, then one of the positive impacts is making distant relationships easier. Love is a beautiful thing, but what if distance says otherwise? It can be saddening at times to want to be with one's partner but couldn't. Then what would have been an option seems not available, too, but with the help of technology, communication is made easier.
I didn't know I would be writing a post on this topic, as this was what I was discussing with my parents yesterday. During their dating years, there was no mobile phone and technology was not too rooted then. My dad resides in Minna, while my mom resides in Kwara; oh, what a distance. These two lovebirds have no way of communicating, but they have an agreement. My dad visits every month, sometimes twice a month, while my mom does the same. Then, one day, my dad traveled all the way from Minna to Kwara to visit my mom, only to find out that my mom had traveled to Minna to visit him. You can imagine the stress of traveling such a long distance and not meeting the person. My dad had to board a bus that night back to Minna where my mom was already waiting for him.
They both went through such stress because there was no means of communication. If technology was rooted then and there was a mobile phone, they would have called or sent messages and informed each other before leaving their destination, which would have saved them lots of stress and money spent on transport. Back to the 21st century where we are advanced in technology which makes things a lot easier. I am in a distant relationship, and the only means of communication is through calls, both voice and video, messages, and through social media. Before starting the relationship, I had a deep thinking to see if I was ready for what I was about to go into, but then, it became easier, thanks to technology.
People now feel a bit comfortable with distance relationships because there is the hope of hearing and seeing one's partner anytime one feels like it. As much as technology has made dating easier, it also has some disadvantages, such as putting relationship status online and posting one's partner, which can ruin such relationships if care is not taken.
