Are we financially responsible to other people? (Part 2 of 2) | The Old Path | MCGI
Bible readings: Psalms 37:21, Romans 13:7-8
In various spheres of our lives, we all have responsibilities. Some have their families; wife and children, that they are responsible for. Some have attained the stage of independence and are now responsible for themselves. We live in a world where everyone is on policy of minding their businesses and unconcerned about other people.
This is not the right way we should live our lives. As Christians, we ought to be compassionate by nature. We should show compassion to all men, especially those that are in need. It doesn't matter if it is a family member of ours, or a friend, or someone we can benefit something from. When being compassionate, we shouldn't expect anything in return.
We don't show compassion for us to be paid back or because we owe it to the person we are being compassionate to. We show compassion because we owe it to God. We are obligated by God to help those in need. If we truly seek to see God pleased we won't fail to extend care and help to those that are in need.
One of the reasons God blesses us is so that we can be a blessing to others. We are not blessed for our own benefits alone or for the benefit of our families. Other people also should benefit from our blessings. This is the kind of lifestyle God expects from us.
If the only time someone receives from us financially is because we owe them, then we are not living right. But If peradventure we owe anyone anything we should ensure to pay back. Paying off our debts is very important. Let's see what Psalms 37:21 has to say about this.
Psalms 37:21 - The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.
Borrowing and not paying back is an act of wickedness. I believe if we are being called a wicked person, it won't sound pleasing in our ears. Our lives should be lived in fulfilment of God's law. We fulfill the law of God by loving one another, by being a means of help to them and also by owing no man anything.
