The Handmaiden - Asian Films Are Like Flying Into Space!

Тhat's what I call cinema! Everything necessary to surprise the viewer and give them a pleasant pastime came together here. It's great when you don't want to rush the actors or rack your brains over why I'm watching this? It is rare to find films that manage to keep the intrigue going until the final scene, deceiving the viewer several times.

This is not even a movie, but a film layer, when an amazingly interesting story unfolds before us, in which you are immersed literally from the first frames. We absorb what is happening, delve into it, believe, are surprised, as about halfway through we understand that everything is not at all what it seemed. Events unfold in an unpredictable way, shuffling everything previously seen and turning it inside out, illuminating it from a completely different point of view.

The film immerses us in interwar Japanese-occupied South Korea. A girl named Suki, who at first glance seems modest and once lived in utter poverty, comes to work as a maid for a wealthy Japanese family. However, the new owners do not even suspect that the girl has come with a very insidious purpose, which will soon radically change all their lives.

In short, the passion shown on the screen with a touch of eroticism is so convincing that it is impossible not to get excited by some of the scenes, which are presented from a very open and aesthetic perspective.

I watched the special version, which is half an hour longer, so certain scenes seen in the previous version were supplemented here with both dialogues and extended episodes, which force the viewer to delve deeper into the story, revealing new details of the entire storyline.

As for the story itself, it rarely happens to me that a film's plot manages to deceive so many times. Expecting an ordinary film about deception, I got a serious-looking and extremely gracefully thought-out story, during which everything turns upside down three times, so it is impossible to predict what the finale will look like. So I urge you not to read official descriptions and not to watch any trailers if you do not want to reveal too many details to yourself. I write without any "spoilers", so you can rest assured.

I also liked the characters, and each of them was worked out to perfection. In this film, all the main characters were revealed, so in the finale we get an accurate portrait of each of them and, of course, we know who to give our sympathies to. Because in one case or another, opinions can fluctuate due to the very cleverly presented plot, which at one moment, at another, presents us with the characters from completely different perspectives than we could have imagined.

There is a lot of symbolism in the film, and there are also many features of two completely different cultures - Korean and Japanese. There is no need to say anything more about the content of the film, because why spoil the viewing with revealed details?

It was a pleasure to watch such aesthetic film. Thanks to the editing, the viewer is led by the nose for almost three hours of screening. The artistic design also looks solid, so many scenes here look like postcards. And the music...

The film is absolutely not for children, but on the contrary, it is full of frank scenes of an unconventional nature. In my opinion, this was greatly decorated and diversified, as did the stunningly bright picture with magnificent landscapes in a mixture of different styles and cultures. Excellent entourage in the game of human minds and plans, and which of them will win will remain a mystery until the very end. Tolerant people will not regret watching it.

The authors did not limit themselves to two versions of events, and closer to the end we learn more and more. So, initially, the initial circumstances were, to put it mildly, shocking. However, the further, the more. Working on the picture with strokes and halftones, making it three-dimensional. A fairly original story, thanks to new facets and details, shone like a diamond, framed by an attractive frame of adult games.

It would not have been possible to get the maximum effect from this story without the performers of the main characters. So the convincing, solid and very memorable acting of each of these four turned this already special-looking story into a very charming spectacle.
