From School to Kitchen: How Baking Skills Shape My Life

Learning at least one skill should be a necessity. I personally believe that every child should learn a skill from their school or better still from home. Some of us grew from a home where our parents had beautiful skills. We were opportune to learn from home while some of us were not. We had to be very intentional when we had the opportunity in school. In the journey of life, there are certain skills we acquire that leave a lasting impact on us , shaping the way we live in the world around us. For me, one such skill is baking, a special craft I first learned during my school days and which I still continue to use to this day. It has brought joy and sweetness to the lives of others around me.

As a student, in my JSS lll, I was introduced to an interesting part of learning which was the art of baking, through the classes I was taught the fundamentals of pastry making and cake decoration. From being a learner to mastering the perfect sponge cake to intricately piping delicate and beautiful designs, I was so attracted to baking, though we were taught a lot of things like making of clothes, shoe and the rest but the idea baking and venturing into the world of flour, sugar, and butter, was where I discovered my passion that has stay with me long even after my graduation.

Let me quickly Fast forward the story to the present day, and I find myself putting those baking skills to good use in my everyday life. Whether it's crafting birthday cakes for myself, yeah since then till now I do all my birthday cakes except there are gifts from people, i also bake cakes for my loved ones or making some delicious cupcakes, doughnuts, etc to share with friends, the lessons learned in the school kitchen continue to serve me well.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my baking skill is that it gives me an opportunity to bring joy to others through the little little homemade creations, sometimes I do make my family breakfast by making them a special pancake, yeah there is something truly special about presenting a freshly baked cake or some small chips to your family or someone special, knowing that it was made with love and care. I have always surprised my mom with birthday cakes, my dad and siblings, their cake is always on me, this is the satisfaction i derive
Beyond the joy of baking for others, the skills acquired in school have also instilled in me a sense of confidence and self-sufficiency, this little skill I learnt in school has made me to be able to explore my baking journey with ease, experimenting with new recipes and flavors to create delicious treats that delight the senses.

Moreover, the art of baking has taught me some valuable lessons which include patience, precision, and perseverance. Because you really need those morals for meticulously measuring ingredients to patiently wait for cakes to rise and small chop to rise and to bake to perfection, each step in the baking process requires careful attention and dedication. Through trial and error, I have learned the importance of resilience and adaptability, embracing both the successes and the occasional mishaps that come with the territory. Today baking has become a part of my life shaping the way I express creativity, share love, and create lasting memories.
