Martyr Battle Changing Ability | Splinterlands #410

In this post, I'll share my thoughts on the Martyr ability and analyze a battle I fought recently where it played a pivotal role.

    Martyr Ability

The Martyr ability activates upon the monster's death. When a monster with Martyr dies, it grants an immediate boost of +1 to all stats (melee, ranged, magic attack, armor, and health) to adjacent friendly monsters. This ability requires strategic placement of the monster to ensure the key monsters in your team gets the stats boosts to maximize its impact.

    Battle Details

    • Mana Cap: 25
    • Rulesets: Fab Five, Noxious Fumes, Aimless

    Line-up Details

    • Summoner: Keyla Frendul (+1 Armor and Speed)
    • Diemonshark (Tank): A melee tank with high health, armor, and melee damage.
    • Venari Marksrat (Martyr): Positioned next to my key attackers to grant them stat boosts upon its death.
    • Djinn Oshannus: A magic attacker with high speed and health, benefiting immensely from Martyr's stat boost.
    • Torrent Fiend: A low-cost filler to absorb damage from Sneak or Opportunity monsters.
    • Igor Darkspear: Providing ranged damage support from the backline.

    The Strategy

My strategy revolved around utilizing Venari Marksrat's Martyr ability to boost Diemonshark and Djinn Oshannus, my primary damage dealers. Given the Noxious Fumes ruleset, I anticipated that Marksrat would die to poison damage by the second round, triggering its ability. This boost would make Diemonshark an unstoppable tank and elevate Djinn Oshannus's magic damage. I positioned Venari Marksrat directly behind Diemonshark and in front of Djinn Oshannus to ensure both benefitted from its stat boost.

    How the Battle Unfolded

My Venari Marksrat went down in the third round, activating the Martyr ability. The boost to Diemonshark and Djinn Oshannus was immediate and impactful. The opposition had a similar strategy, using their own Venari Marksrat alongside Cursed Windeku and Arachne Weaver. However, the boost to my Djinn Oshannus and Diemonshark tipped the battle in my favor. With their increased stats, these two monsters were able to clinch victory for me. One thing I did note was that the opponent's Arachne Weaver did very well. If my opponent's lineup had been higher-leveled, their strategy may have resulted in a loss, as I struggled to deal enough damage to their backline.

Why I Love the Martyr Ability

The Martyr ability is a perfect example of what makes Splinterlands so great and tactical. Battles involving Martyr often feel like a war game or chess, where you need to think multiple rounds ahead and this thinking will determine where you will place your Martyr monster.
