Three Tune Tuesday: Blocking Subversive Rock and Roll

America likes to think that is celebrates artistic expression and diversity, but that all crumbles when threats against nationalism occur, whether real or perceived. In those situations, they lean into conservative patriarchy, to the demise of everyone outside of that, and rock and roll often becomes an easy target.

This occurred in the late 1990s, after a massive buyout of radio stations in the United States. The government had agreed to wave past laws which were designed to keep regional and independent voices strong. Three major conglomerates soon owned over 80% of the stations nationwide. Small stations that served niche markets, like minority interests or women, quickly disappeared in lieu of the homogenized sounds of primarily white and male America.

So when the 9/11 attacks happened, the largest of these conglomerates, Clear Channel, put out a list of songs that were NOT to be played. Subversive, anti-American songs like "What A Wonderful World". Brainwashing tunes like "Walk Like An Egyptian". Songs that might make you consider embracing your fellow human instead of assuming their look of country of origin was a threat, like "Blowing In The Wind".

Today, the list looks absolutely insane. But sadly, today's United States is not getting much better. The current president and administration have coerced the major social media channels into only reporting "authorized information", with the threat of losing government contracts, licenses or financial ruin if they don't comply. They refuse to include news agencies a presence unless they only report what is desired.

You don't have to lament like The Beatles did when singing "I read the news today, Oh, boy" from "A Day In The Life". That world is among us.

Here's the complete list of 164 "dangerous" songs, published in 2001:
