I'm supposed to be in festive mood - watching Christmas themed films but unfortunately, I'm not. Instead, I went digging for suspense thrillers and this one piqued my interest with its intriguing premise of secrets unraveled in a wealthy family. I expected much from it at first glance at it's poster and I'm glad I wasn't disappointed.
Worth its title, with a mix of power, deceit, and moral dilemmas, the film explores what happens when a young woman is handed a shocking legacy. Initially, I thought the inheritance was going to be a very large estate but the twist dropped my jaw.
Synopsis
Directed by Vaughn Stein, the movie follows Lauren Monroe (played by Lily Collins), a New York district attorney from a powerful family, who inherits a shocking secret from her recently deceased father, Archer. Along with the expected wealth, Lauren discovers a bunker on their estate containing a mysterious man named Morgan Warner (Simon Pegg).
Morgan, held captive for decades, claims to know dark secrets about her father that could destroy the family. Faced with moral and ethical challenges, Lauren must decide whether to keep the family’s skeletons hidden or confront the horrifying truth about her father’s double life.
My Thoughts?
This film works hard to deliver a blend of psychological drama and mystery, and in my opinion, it succeeds. Lily Collins does a decent job portraying Lauren’s conflicting emotions as she juggles loyalty to her family with her personal ethics. Simon Pegg, in a stark departure from his usual comedic roles, is compelling as Morgan, bringing a creepy and unpredictable energy to the film.
I saw some critics say the film falters in its pacing and plausibility but in my opinion it doesn't. I loved the pacing and never felt like any scene should move on quicker than normal. Lauren's expressions and reactions as she uncovered her dad's secrets were palpable.
I like it that the story starts strong with the mystery of the bunker. It's what left me hooked as I craved answers to posing questions. I also like that the twists were shocking and also believable.
For real, Pegg delivers an impressive performance, his character’s revelations and motivations didn't in any way feel underdeveloped as I was fully invested in the stakes.
Visually, Inheritance creates a moody atmosphere, with the bunker scenes being appropriately claustrophobic and tense.
Subjectively, I think it’s an ambitious thriller with an intriguing premise and commendable performances, especially from Simon Pegg. It’s worth watching for fans of psychological dramas, and likely to leave a lasting impression.
I'd leave it with a ⅘ rating. You should check this one out.
Lest I forget, Merry Christmas in advance💕
