It's just me, myself and I

Once in a while, I do find myself remembering very old songs and I would be like "Hey! It's been a while." That was the case today when I found myself humming the song by G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha titled "Me, myself and I". It's a very catchy song that was released back in 2015 and I played it a lot back then but like every other song that was once a favorite, it was eventually forgotten. Bebe Rexha's part remains my favourite, she sang the chorus and that's the part I want to draw attention to in this post.

We have often heard people talk about how important it is to depend on yourself because sometimes when you're passing through the darkest time of your life, even your shadow doesn't stand by your side. This song is a subtle reminder of that advice (or maybe I should just call it a tip) and I have learned how to be self-reliant from a very young age. Many people might think this is about totally shutting out the world but I see it as learning to stand on your own feet without having to lean on other people all the time.

I mean, if you have gotten used to depending on people your whole life, what's going to happen when they are no longer around? It's like a baby bird that never wants to leave the nest and always relies on the mother to bring food back to the nest even when it's old enough to fend for itself, how would such a bird survive when the mother dies or abandons it? You might think this analogy of a bird in its nest is just imaginary but this happens in real life, with humans of course. I have seen cases of children who are spoilt by their parents, growing into adults with an entitlement mentality and not knowing how to do basic things.

There's this sought of confidence that comes with self-reliance, you're able to tackle tasks on your own and solve problems without relying on other people, even though it might take you a while to figure things out. This is also what leads to growth because most of the time you have to step outside your comfort zone just to get things done. It reminds me of my time at the university when I was going through financial difficulties. I wanted to take the easy way out by calling my parents and asking for money but I decided to try to figure things out on my own first.

This led me to try out a new business and although it was shaky at first, it quickly grew later on as I put in more effort. And that's one more benefit of self-reliance; the ability to adapt to any situation. Becoming self-reliant and independent is not even hard to do. The most important thing to know is that you have to embrace learning; never stop learning. Read a book, take a class or watch a tutorial, just keep acquiring knowledge because that's mostly what you need to solve any challenge life throws at you.

Challenging yourself is also important, I mean you have to be able to jump out of the nest if you want to learn how to fly. Get out of your comfort zone; learn a new skill, travel to new places, take that class, you never know what you're capable of unless you try. Also, remember that independence and self-reliance aren't the same as isolation, there's a thin line between them and you should know the difference. I guess what I'm saying is that be self-reliant but know when to ask for help also.

Anyway, it was great listening to this song again today and reinforcing my brain with the powerful message behind it. I talked about how I love the chorus by Bebe Rexha but G-Eazy's rap goes hard also, he did say a lot of things that will make you think hard about life. Another subtle message behind this song is that you should always prioritize yourself and not be confined to society's expectations; unapologetically embrace your unique identity because in the end, that's nobody more reliable than yourself, you only got you for life.
