Puede ser usted el ser humano más estoico del planeta; sin embargo, calmado que parezca, siempre se va encontrar situaciones que similares a un cruce en "Y" y puede parecer una decisión sencilla. No obstante, la realidad impuesta por la dinámica de nuestro país -Venezuela- nos ha colocado frente a una interrogante increíblemente desafiante ¿la razón? Bueno, sólo debe imaginarla al leer el título de nuestra divagación de hoy. Por un lado, tienes la calma. En efecto, me encuentro en un país donde todo parece funcionar (al menos en la superficie) y es una sociedad de nuestro gusto. Por otro lado, está mi país al que adoro, que me hizo quien soy y lo llevo incrustado en mis entrañas; pero con una situación política al borde de una tormenta como no se ha visto en decenios y donde la vida discurre entre crisis y crisis desde hace un buen rato (al menos desde el año 1989, "Caracazo" dixit).

You may be the most stoic human being on the planet; however, as calm as it may seem, you will always find yourself in situations similar to a “Y” junction and it may seem like a simple decision. However, the reality imposed by the dynamics of our country -Venezuela- has placed us in front of an incredibly challenging question, the reason? Well, you only have to imagine it when you read the title of today's digression. On the one hand, you have the calm. Indeed, I find myself in a country where everything seems to work (at least on the surface) and it is a society to our liking. On the other hand, there is my country, which I adore, which made me who I am and which I carry embedded in my entrails; but with a political situation on the verge of a storm such as has not been seen in decades and where life has been going on between crisis and crisis for quite some time now (at least since 1989, “Caracazo” dixit).
Planteada la disyuntiva, veamos las ventajas de regresar: tenemos la fortuna de poseer vivienda propia, por lo que evitamos el pago de renta por un hogar. Está emplazado en una urbanización de clase media tranquila y que está bendecida por menos fallas de servicios públicos que el hogar promedio venezolano (quien sabe porqué). Vehículo propio en buen estado, aunque ya viejo. Aunque hoy día no viajamos por el país por limitaciones de combustible, es uno de los lugares más bellos del planeta. Lo conozco enteramente y sólo falta Canaima en nuestra lista de lugares por visitar (Amazonas y Apure se escapan, pero quizás los atractivos son menores y hay muchas dificultades para acceder). Aunque el promedio venezolano le falta cultura, compensan esto con el don de gente: solidarios, alegres y de una resiliencia que ya quisiera yo poseer. En suma, está metido en mi alma.

Having made the choice, let's look at the advantages of returning: we are fortunate enough to own our own home, so we avoid paying rent for a home. It is located in a quiet middle class urbanization and is blessed with fewer utility failures than the average Venezuelan home (who knows why). Own vehicle in good condition, although already old. Although today we do not travel around the country due to fuel limitations, it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I know it entirely and only Canaima is missing in our list of places to visit (Amazonas and Apure escape, but perhaps the attractions are smaller and there are many difficulties to access). Although the average Venezuelan lacks culture, they compensate for this with the gift of people: supportive, cheerful and with a resilience that I wish I had. In short, it is in my soul.
Y ¿Cuáles son las dudas para volver? ¡Vaya! A éstas alturas, si usted no lo sabe, ha estado completamente desconectado de la geopolítica. En el estira y encoge presente entre gobierno y oposición, la paz se aleja poco a poco y la amenaza de un estado totalitario se hace más real mientras el tiempo avance. No hay garantías en un país que persiga a su gente por decir lo que piensa. Y los valores de libertad están demasiados cimentados en nuestro talante, como para tener que someter mis años dorados a una tiranía criminal. A eso, sume la necesidad de comenzar a pagar renta y servicios costosos, además de todas aquellos gastos ocultos que desconocemos por no residir en un país extranjero. Además, con riesgo de perder lo trabajado con tanto sacrificio y lo cual reduciría nuestra calidad de vida.

And what are the doubts to come back? Wow! By now, if you don't know, you have been completely disconnected from geopolitics. In the present tug-of-war between government and opposition, peace is slowly slipping away and the threat of a totalitarian state becomes more real as time marches on. There are no guarantees in a country that persecutes its people for speaking their minds. And the values of liberty are too deeply rooted in our disposition to have to subject my golden years to a criminal tyranny. Add to that the need to start paying rent and expensive utilities, plus all those hidden expenses we don't know about because we don't live in a foreign country. In addition, with the risk of losing what we have worked so hard for and which would reduce our quality of life.
¿Lo ve ahora, estimado lector? Es existencialismo puro y duro. Una decisión muy difícil. Escoger entre principios e inmoralidad, calma o caos, soleado o tempestuoso, en fin... La amenaza que se cierne sobre Venezuela es real y si nuestros compatriotas no cambian la situación antes de nuestro regreso, será una disyuntiva muy clave en nuestra vida. Se supone llegan los tiempos de cosecha, una vez que estás a las puertas de la tercera edad. Pero jamás desearía a un ser humano encontrarse en una "Y" de este tipo. Quizás, mi esposa @aventurerasbike lo tenga más claro y lo más probable es que me deje llevar por su intuición, al fin y al cabo ha sido mi compañera durante más de 30 años. Sí, también sé que se respiran aires de libertad en Venezuela, prolongar nuestra estadía acá podría ser una solución temporal, pero solo es eso. Y tú, estimado lector ¿Qué elegirías para tí?
