    KISS

    Theme:ROCK N' ROLL ALL NITE.
    Disc:Dressed To Kill.
    Year:1975.

Kiss has always been, and above all (besides a great rock n' roll band) a band dedicated 100% to the most absolute fun. Everything about them was from the beginning enormously attractive and exciting, from their songs to their visual magnetism, with that look of a cross between superheroes and fantastic comic characters. The impact in America, not to mention their success in Japan, where they were established stars since the early days, was tremendous, and although the competition was tough in the days when their first album appeared, as they had to fight with other “debutants” like Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, or Queen on the other side of the Atlantic, they always knew how to stand out with that unmistakable personality that helped them to create one of the most loyal fan bases known to mankind.

However, the face paints, the smoke and blood stage antics, and their exaggerated costumes, did not seem to guarantee the commercial success of their first albums, even though over time “Kiss”, “Hotter Than Hell” or “Dressed To Kill” have become unforgettable classics in their own right. In 1975 their record company, Casablanca, was in bankruptcy, and its leader, Neil Bogart, saw in Kiss a possibility to get out of the hole. Undoubtedly, the band's potential was infinite, but they still lacked that potential hit that would sweep the charts and bring them enough profit to consolidate their position in the rock stardom and to clean up the weakened economy of their record company. This is how he let Paul “The Starman” Stanley and Gene “The Demon” Simmons, the natural leaders of the New York quartet and main songwriters of the band, know it.

Bogart decided to produce the new recording sessions of the group, we don't know if it was because he wanted to personally extract all the magic of the combo or to save on another producer of more renown, but what is certain is that he was desperately looking for that hit single that was yet to come. The result of those sessions was “Rock N' Roll All Nite”, a song that Simmons had shaped from an old piece called “Drive Me Wild” to which Stanley contributed the catchy chorus.

The song perfectly defined the festive character of Kiss, but, in spite of having all the numbers to climb the charts, its repercussion was again minor. Even so, it was only for a short time; a few months later, Kiss decided to capture the exciting atmosphere of their live shows on vinyl and recorded the double live album “Alive”, one of the best live albums of all time. The album's version of “Rock N' Roll All Nite”, slightly longer than the studio version thanks to the inclusion of the guitar solo by the sensational “Ace Frehley”, catapulted them to absolute fame by faithfully capturing the explosive dimension of this anthem on stage.

    KISS

The track eventually charted well (12) and propelled the album to the top of the Billboard charts, making Kiss stars. Since then, “Rock N' Roll All Nite” has closed the band's concerts amidst general delirium, and has been the inspiration for the whole string of typically “Party All Night Long” songs that so many hard rock bands, especially among the hair metal figures of the 80s (from Warrant to Slaughter) have turned into party anthems.
