Archeological Dig Site - Sitio Barriles - Volcan Panama

Sitio Barriles is an archeological site located a few kilometers up Via Caizan from us. As you enter, you can tell it’s going to be a beautiful place to walk around.

Sitio Barriles is open every day from 8-4 according to google maps. I recommend you call or message them to make sure they’re open and set up a tour. You can find their phone number on google maps as well. The tour is $5 per person for everyone over age 12. They are available in English or Spanish. Edna gives the English tours and she does a great job! It is $2 per person to just walk around the property.

Years ago the property was purchased and used as a small hotel. The original stove is located on the property still with an original waffle maker – the first in the area!

In the 1950s, National Geographic and Smithsonian sent two doctors to check out the area and begin a dig. They found many items like grinding stones, stone tools, and even ancient ash, which indicated the people were cooking there.

As part of the tour, you can enter a room where they have many artifacts that have been found on the property. One large burial jar was uncovered years ago when they went to bury one of their dogs. They have also found grinding stones and other pots.

In 2001 some Germans dated all the items and they believe it was from a civilization that was here from 400-600 BC. The site is named Barriles because of the stone barrels they found there.

There is even a fresh spring that runs through the property.

As you can see, there are many trails to follow around the property with so many interesting plants labeled. You can see bananas, palms, heliconias, fruit trees, and so much more! It’s a beautiful location.

Some of the items they have found, they have left where they found them, because they know if they take them out, they will crumble away. You can see them preserved in this wall.

Many of the drawings that were found on rocks are thought to be maps of different locations in the area, with the largest stone being a map to the top of Baru. There is also a replica of a statue that was found.

If you’re in the area, I highly recommend you check out Sitio Barriles.
