The Unforgettable Lie

"You children don't fear anything, throw the cockroaches away". My mom shouted at me and my friends. When I was a kid, I had two best friends, Joe and Joel. The funny thing about us is that we feared nothing. Our parents have caught us many times picking up harmful insects. There was a day we were searching the bush to kill the snake that crawled in there. We were lucky it escaped without attacking us.

As we were returning from school one day, each of us caught a chameleon and took it to our parents to help us grow them. The path to school had few bushes with a great number of chameleons living there.Because of this habit of ours, my mom one day called my friends and I to our veranda and advised us. She said," you children are lucky the chameleons you caught didn't see you as enemies but if you ever go there again the chameleons would change the color of your skin and uniforms to contrasting colors". She asked us,"I'm sure you children know most of those chameleons have contrasting colors, right"? And we answered,"yes!!!!!!"

We were scared of having skin and school uniforms with contrasting colors so we told her we would not go to school again. She told us that she will help us by showing us another route to school. The new route is tared with a zebra crossing of contrasting colors but farther from school. We didn't forget this route because of the zebra crossing.

But now that I have grown and has known more about chameleons, I discovered that my mom had told us an unforgettable lie.
