Let me take you along on our journey and share our experience of exploring this beautiful church and the nearby town of Santander.

    Arriving in Boljoon

The town of Boljoon is quiet and charming, with simple houses, green hills, and a view of the ocean. It feels like stepping back in time. When we arrived, the first thing that caught out attention was the old church. The Patrocinio de Maria Parish Church is over 400 years old, and you can tell it has seen a lot of history. Built during the Spanish period, it's one of the oldest churches in Cebu, and you can feel its historical significance right away.

    The Church's Fascinating History

The church was first established in 1599, but the current structure was completed in 1783. That's a long time ago! This church was built during a time when the Philippines was under Spanish rule, and Spanish friars introduced the Catholic faith to the locals. The church wasn't just used for prayers and worship, it also served as a fort to protect the town from pirate attacks.
Boljoon is located along the coast, making it easy for pirates to come ashore. So, the church was designed to be strong. With thick walls and a sturdy bell tower, it acted as a safe place for the community during those dangerous times. Today, the church stands as a symbol of Boljoon's resilience and faith. It's even considered a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines, a title given only to places with great historical and cultural value.

    Exploring the Church's Unique Design

One of the things we enjoyed most was looking at the church's design. The church has a baroque architectural style, which means it has a lot of beautiful details. The front of the church, is simple yet elegant, with arched windows, columns, and decorative elements that mix both European and local designs.

    The Strong Bell Tower

One of the most unique parts of this church is its bell tower. Unlike other bell towers that are just used to call people to mass, this one also served as a lookout tower. The narrow windows in the tower allowed people to watch pirates approaching from the sea. The bell tower was part of the church's defense system, showing that the church was built not only for worship but also to protect the town. The strong, thick walls around the church added another layer of defense, making it safe place for the people of Boljoon.

    Quiet Place for Reflection

Besides its historical significance, the church is also a peaceful place where people come to reflect and pray. Many locals and visitors come here not just to admire its beauty, but to spend a quiet moment in prayer or meditation. The atmosphere inside the church is calm and serene, which made us feel at ease.
During our visit, my friends and I took some time to sit and enjoy the peacefulness. It was nice to pause and reflect on the past while being surrounded by history. The church has a special energy that makes you feel connected to something greater, whether you're religious or not. This calmness, combined with the church's beauty, makes it a unique place to visit.

    Scenic Views Around the Church

The church's location adds to its charm. Since it's close to the coast, you can enjoy beautiful views of the sea and nearby mountains. After exploring the church, we took a walk around and admired the scenery. The view of the ocean, with its blue water and gentle waves, was truly refreshing. The hills in the background made the place even more beautiful and attractive. The peaceful surroundings of the church make it a perfect spot for reflection, and we couldn't resist taking some photos to capture the moment.

    Side Trip to Santander

After our time in Boljoon, we decided to visit a nearby town called Santander. It's known for its clear waters and beautiful beaches, making it a great place for nature lovers. In Santander, we found a large sign with "Santander" painted on it, and we stopped to take some photos there. The colorful sign and the beach vibe gave us a nice change of scenery after the historical experience at Boljoon.
Santander is only a short drive from Boljoon, so it's easy to visit both places in a single day. If you're looking for a mix of history and nature, Boljoon and Santander are a perfect combination. Visiting both gave us a full experience of Cebu's rich culture and natural beauty.
