Bocchi the Rock! 「ぼっち・ざ・ろっく!」 (2022, 12 episodes)

in voilk •  4 days ago

Overrated show that massively betrays expectations. This show is not about young musicians playing together in a band, as you might expect. There are only three songs played throughout the entire show and first two are impossible to enjoy due to constant voice-over internal dialogue.

Protagonist is not a typical shy schoolgirl but a character who is beyond socially awkward, far into autistic spectrum. During the show she is frequently having epilepsy-like episodes, or drifts away and remains in semi-unconscious state, just because someone addressed her in conversation. She is barely improving, despite having continuous support of two or three people just so that she is barely able to perform most basic duties. She also plays music (rarely), but mostly struggles with her condition, frequently crawling into carton box or waste bin to recuperate.

In one (comedy) episode, friends came to visit her house and her parents were genuinely surprised to see guests because they expected imaginary friends to come.

It is safe to say that some degree of social anxiety is familiar to us all, but what portrayed in this show is clinical, presented as comedy, seemingly to promote compassion to autistic people.
Watch it if you have autistic relatives or friends, otherwise it might be hard to enjoy, despite some genuinely funny moments.

Another weird thing about this show is that it is almost exclusively girls-only, with boys appearing only for some seconds of screen time.
