The viviparous lizard, or common lizard, (Zootoca vivipara, formerly Lacerta vivipara)

Reptiles are known to us from school as oviparous creatures. Their eggs are covered with hard shell membranes on the outside and are supplied with all the necessary nutrients on the inside. Thus, reptiles are able to produce offspring outside the water.

The decisive factor for the development of the little ones is the temperature of the soil in which the eggs are buried. In the west and south of the range, there are no problems with heat. But what about the cold regions?
Northern populations do not lay eggs, but walk around with them inside throughout their development. This process is called ovoviviparity.
