Belgian Kafka, half the country can use a reversing electricity counter because of solar panels, the other half can’t by law!

    Reversing counter

The saga of the reversing counter has been a joyride for almost 7 years. At first everyone was allowed to keep his reversing electricity counter from the electricity generated by their photovoltaic panels. A good deal, that paid back the investment of buying the panels. And it keeps the electricity bill low, or sometimes at zero.

But a few years ago, the Flemish side of Belgium got obligated to install a digital counter that can’t reverse. Deadline is 2026! So, excess electricity just gets injected into the net and you just receive a very tiny fee for the injected electricity. Flanders felt like they got robbed, but the law was pushed through.

    Not so in Wallonia

Now on the other side of Belgium, Wallonia, this law wasn’t passed. To the contrary, the local government decided that people kept the right of a reversing counter at least until 2030. The Flemish people get even more pissed now, and one of the ministers of the Flemish government sues the Wallonia government to push the law through. Today, the court advisor ruled that the lawsuit is not acceptable. Which means the reversing counter can be kept up until 2030 in Wallonia.

Pure Kafka, unworthy of a developed nation, but reality!

    Sincerely,
