There is nothing more distressing in life than having a child with an unknown illness and not being able to do anything to remedy it, or to prevent their suffering, years can be spent going from doctor to doctor, trying different treatments in search of hope for health.
Take Care of Maya is a Netflix documentary from the year 2023, which I watched a few months ago and hadn't written a review because it's not an easy story to tell, I had to wait for my emotions to be as neutral as possible to describe the events without losing objectivity, it's about an American family that was separated and mistreated by the system while seeking to solve their daughter Maya's health problem.
No existe algo más desesperante en la vida que tener un hijo con una enfermedad desconocida y no poder hacer nada para remediarlo, ni para evitar su sufrimiento, se pueden pasar años de médico en médico, probando diferentes tratamientos en busca de una esperanza que traiga salud.
Cuiden a Maya es un documental de Netflix del año 2023, que pude ver hace unos meses y no había sacado la reseña porque no es una historia fácil de contar, tenía que esperar que mis emociones fueran los más neutrales posibles para poder describir los hechos sin perder la objetividad, trata sobre una familia Norteamericana que fue separada y maltratada por el sistema mientras buscaban solucionar el problema de salud de su hija Maya.
Plot | Argumento
The documentary begins by describing the entire family, starting with the parents' relationship, when they met and what they did, they were the parents and two children, the female named Maya and protagonist of the documentary and her younger brother, the typical happy American family of 4 members, until one day Maya started experiencing sudden pains that prevented her from moving normally, the pains were so strong that her legs started to bend and numb, Maya's mother who was a nurse didn't know what was happening to her daughter and they decided to take her to several specialists, but none could diagnose it, until they found a doctor who gave them a possible diagnosis: it was a rare disease known as complex regional pain syndrome, this disease causes pain to spread over time when there is an injury, instead of disappearing with the wound healing, and even though no visible lesion was seen on the body, that's why it was difficult to determine what the problem was.
It could be mistaken for a mental illness, which was ruled out but without finding the true reason for Maya's behavior. The only hope was given by the doctor who provided a diagnosis, but the treatment was extremely delicate, as it was experimental due to being a rare disease, they had to give her a very high dose of a drug where they even had to induce a coma in the girl for 5 days, the parents were desperate so they took on any responsibility and tried this treatment, which fortunately had positive results, and for a year Maya's life normalized and the family could breathe thinking it was all over, and that with the supply of this drug their daughter would be able to lead a normal life.
But like all medicine over time, it began to lose effect, higher doses were needed, I can't remember exactly what happened with the old doctor, Maya fell ill again and had to be hospitalized, and that's when the second nightmare for this family began, the hospital employees, not having a clear diagnosis and finding out that the girl's mother was a nurse and was administering a delicate medicine in high doses, escalated the case to higher authorities involving child welfare and taking custody of Maya away from her parents.
El documental comienza describiendo a toda la familia, iniciando por como fue la relación de los padres, cuando se conocieron y a lo que se dedicaban, eran los padres y dos hijos, la hembra de nombre Maya y protagonista del documental y su hermano menor, la típica familia norteamericana de 4 miembros felices, hasta que un día Maya empezó a tener dolores repentinos que le impedían moverse con normalidad, los dolores eran tan fuertes que sus piernas empezaron doblarse y a entumecerse, la mamá de Maya que era enfermera no sabía lo que le estaba pasando a su hija y decidieron llevarla con varios especialistas, pero ninguno daba con el diagnóstico, hasta que encontraron a un doctor que les dio un posible diagnóstico era una rara enfermedad que se trataba del síndrome de dolor regional, esta enfermedad lo que hace es que cuando se tiene una lesión el dolor en vez de desaparecer con la misma cicatrización de la herida, se expande con el tiempo aumentando y aunque visiblemente no se vea en el cuerpo ninguna lesión, por eso costaba determinar cuál era el problema.
Se podía confundir con una enfermedad mental, que fue descartada pero sin encontrar la verdadera razón del comportamiento de Maya. La única esperanza fue dada por el médico que dio un diagnóstico, pero el tratamiento era sumamente delicado, ya que era experimental por ser una rara enfermedad, tenían que darle una cantidad elevadísima de un fármaco donde incluso tuvieron que inducir por 5 días en coma a la niña, los padres estaban desesperados así que asumieron cualquier responsabilidad y probaron este tratamiento, que afortunadamente los resultados fueron positivos, y por un año la vida de Maya se normalizó y la familia pudo respirar pensando que todo había terminado, y que con el suministro de esta droga su hija iba a poder llevar una vida normal.
Pero como toda medicina a lo largo del tiempo va perdiendo efectividad, se necesitó dosis más elevadas, no recuerdo bien que sucedió con el antiguo doctor, Maya volvió a enfermar y tuvieron que internarla en un hospital y es cuando comienza la segunda pesadilla de esta familia, los empleados de este hospital al no tener un diagnóstico claro y enterarse que la mama de la niña era enfermera y que por su parte le administraba una medicina delicada en dosis elevadas, pasaron este caso a instancias superiores tomando el caso bienestar infantil y quitándole la custodia de Maya a sus padres.

Within the documentary, we can feel the desperation of these parents to be close to their daughter, no one but them could understand their suffering, but the officials were also doing their job, although here I must say that separating a girl from her parents abruptly cannot be beneficial, if what was wanted was to investigate the whole context they should have kept the family together. Officials suspected that the girl was pretending her pain to please her mother and that Maya's mom wanted to be seen as a super mom, pretending to care for her daughter while making her sick.
What happened in the end, well, the policies focused on their suspicions instead of prioritizing improving Maya's health, while the mom was collapsing from the anguish of her daughter's health and also feeling accused of a crime. The ending was very sad, it was proven that many families had gone through similar situations where the state took their children away, I recommend watching the documentary and learning firsthand the whole story.
Dentro del documental podemos sentir la desesperación de estos padres por estar cerca de su hija, nadie más que ellos podían entender su sufrimiento, pero los funcionarios también estaban haciendo su trabajo, aunque aquí si debo decir que separar una niña de sus padres de forma abrupta no puede ser beneficioso, si lo que se quería era investigar todo el contexto debían eran mantener a la familia unida. Los funcionarios sospechaban que la niña fingía su dolor para complacer a su madre y que la mamá de Maya lo que quería era ser vista como una supermamá, que se preocupaba por su hija mientras la enfermaba.
Que sucedió al final, pues las políticas se enfocaron en sus sospechas en vez de ser la prioridad mejorar la salud de Maya, mientras que la mamá estaba colapsando por la angustia de la salud de su hija y también por sentirse acusada de un hecho criminal. El final fue muy triste, se comprobó que muchas familias habían pasado por situaciones similares donde el estado les quitaban a sus hijos, recomiendo ver el documental y conocer de primera mano toda la historia.
