Embracing Locally Produced Drinks; A Demand For Flavor & Wellness.

Being a foodie, my affairs with food extend beyond just solid food because I am passionate about beverages as well. The combination of both solid and fluid takes a foodie's experience to a whole new level and I believe many people can relate to that. I have so many favorite drinks but one stands out for me and it's known as Desperado.

The very first time I tasted the drink, I became addicted because of the tequila flavour in it. It's a very lovely drink but the price has doubled in the last six months and it would be unwise for me to continue splashing money on this beverage just because it's my favorite. I didn't write this post to advertise a product and it's an opportunity for me to pour out a few things I have always want share about our consumption of carbonated drinks and locally produced drinks.

The recent hike in the price of things in Nigeria has opened my eyes to a lot of things we are missing out on globally. Back in 2022, a bottle of Pepsi was sold for 100 naira in Nigeria, we bought the drink for 200 naira in 2023 and here we are buying that same drink for 300 naira while the price of so many local drinks has barely increased by fifty per cent.

I am not the type who loves to drink all these carbonated drinks but once in a while especially after roaming the street of Lagos under the hot sun always require the service of these drinks and I realized that I haven't had them in months now just because I think they are being sold for unreasonable prices. Instead of having these drinks, I have developed so much interest in locally produced drinks even though I have my challenges with them as well.

Just like I take hygiene seriously with food, I don't ignore the slightest issue I see with drinks as well. Everything that passes through our mouth into the belly has a lot to do with the body system so we must be extra careful not to spend our money on things that would eventually cause complications for us.

When you ask people why they choose carbonated drinks over locally produced ones, a lot of people would mention hygiene and it baffles me how sure they are those carbonated drinks are hygienic; just because these drinks are produced with machines doesn't guarantee that they are hygienic. Aside from hygiene, the regular intake of carbonated beverages can be harmful to the health in many ways which a lot of us are ignorant about.

To be candid, I find many of those locally produced drinks more beneficial to my health than gulping down some sugar and colouring sold at a very expensive price.

Zobo is one of my favourite drinks and this drink is really medicinal for me and to avoid regretting choosing locally produced drinks many local drinks producers can be very annoying, I have a fixed place where I get it from because I have witnessed the process and it was satisfying. Not just Zobo, the likes of tigernut drink, ginger drink, soya milk and many locally produced drinks are made from natural food, fruits and herbs which are doing our body system a whole lot of good.

The competition between carbonated drinks and locally produced drinks is zero and that's why the producers of carbonated drinks increase the price of their products as they wish. A little support from us to the producers of locally produced drinks is capable of starting a competition that would force the regulation of prices. After all, these carbonated drinks are practically offering us nothing.

If we don't trust the local drinks products, we can also learn how to make these drinks ourselves and with that, hygiene is guaranteed, saving money is certain and we are also investing in our health.

The Marchinleo initiative is amazing and it would be awesome for you to check it out.
