In my journey of what to find myself to read, I came across a recommendation of books in Spanish and I kept looking, waiting for which one could catch my attention, and both the cover and the synopsis of this book made me look for it immediately and start reading it. That's how I bring you today the review of the horror and science fiction book: "La piel fría" (2017) by the author Albert Sánchez Piñol. The plot revolves around a man fugitive from justice, an Irish ex-guerrilla who, due to very unfortunate personal decisions, embarks on a journey to an island that is so remote and far away from all humanity that it is described to us as an apocalyptic landscape.
En mi travesía de qué encontrarme para leer, me topé con una recomendación de libros en español y me quedé viendo, a la espera de cual podría atrapar mi atención, y tanto la portada como la sinopsis de este libro me hicieron buscarlo de inmediato y empezar su lectura. Así es cómo les traigo hoy la reseña del libro de terror y ciencia ficción: “La piel fría” (2017) del autor Albert Sánchez Piñol. La trama gira en torno a un hombre prófugo de la justicia, un ex-guerrillero irlandés que por decisiones personales muy desafortunadas, se embarca en un viaje a una isla que es tan recóndita y alejada de toda la humanidad que se nos describe como un paisaje apocalíptico.
What takes him there is a one-year job in which he will have the responsibility of being a technician who measures the meteorological conditions of the island, a position with very few applicants and minimal requirements to keep it. For our fugitive, it is an opportunity to get away from what haunts him, from everything that torments him, and it is a chance to reinvent himself.
Lo que lo lleva allí es un trabajo de un año en el que tendrá la responsabilidad de ser un técnico que mide las condiciones meteorológicas de la isla, un cargo con muy pocos postulantes y mínimas exigencias requeridas para quedarse con el mismo. Para nuestro prófugo, es una oportunidad para alejarse de aquello que le persigue, de todo lo que le atormenta, y es la oportunidad de reinventarse.
We can see, feel and explore the island through the words of a man whose name we do not even know, but that of his companion in this period of isolation that awaits him. His name is Batís Caffó, a sullen, eccentric man, with vague moments of intellectual enlightenment and others in which he acts purely guided by his wildest instincts. In short, the least supportive companion you could have in such precarious conditions as those involved in living on an island cut off from the outside world.
Podemos ver, sentir y explorar la isla a través de las palabras de un hombre del cual ni siquiera conocemos el nombre, pero sí el de su acompañante en este período de aislamiento que le espera. Su nombre es Batís Caffó, un hombre huraño, excéntrico, con momentos vagos de iluminación intelectual y otros en los que actúa puramente guiado por sus instintos más salvajes. En definitiva, el compañero que menos apoyo podría brindarte en condiciones tan precarias cómo las que implica vivir en una isla incomunicada con el mundo exterior.
What makes the island, which could very well be a character in its own right (or at least I consider it so), so threatening and inhospitable to all human life, is not the fact that it is practically a ghost island, or the end of the world materialized on a piece of land, but the terrible discovery that our protagonist makes in what will be just the first night of a long nightmare from which he will not know how to wake up, inhabited by strange marine beings, with anthropomorphic forms and whose only objective is to liquidate all invaders that inhabit his home.
Lo que hace a la isla, que perfectamente podría ser un personaje por cuenta propia (o por lo menos yo lo considero así), tan amenazante e inhóspita para toda vida humana, no es el hecho de ser prácticamente una isla fantasma, o el fin del mundo materializado en un pedazo de tierra, sino el terrible descubrimiento que hace nuestro protagonista en la que será apenas la primera noche de una larga pesadilla de la cual no sabrá cómo despertar habitan seres marinos extraños, con formas antropomórficas y que sólo tienen el objetivo de liquidar a todo invasor que habite en su hogar.

MI OPINIÓN - MY THOUGHTS
Now, I must say that it is an extremely involving, original and gloomy story, which has an extensively rich vocabulary, and you can see that the author is very detailed as he takes us into this world of chaos, madness and human survival. It was interesting to explore along with the protagonist the conflicts around cruelty and selfishness; the struggle for ideals and the consequences of fighting for them; the persistent internal struggle to maintain sanity and the thin boundary that divides man from animal and how we are every day maintaining, repressing, holding back our nature.
Ahora bien, debo decir que es una historia sumamente envolvente, original y tétrica, que tiene un vocabulario extensamente rico, y se puede ver que el autor es muy detallista al adentrarnos a este mundo de caos, locura y de supervivencia humana. Fue interesante explorar junto con el protagonista los conflictos en torno a la crueldad y el egoísmo; la lucha por los ideales y las consecuencias de pelear por ellos; la persistente lucha interna por mantener la cordura y el delgado límite que divide el hombre del animal y cómo estamos todos los días manteniendo, reprimiendo, sujetando hacía atrás a nuestra naturaleza.
However, it was for me a rather difficult reading to follow more for subjective reasons that I will explain anyway: there are forms of writing in certain books that sometimes sin of pseudo-intellectualism, and the ideas are intermingled, so there are many technicalities that in the end do not convey anything. This story is not one of them, but I still found it exhausting to read and understand at the same time, I got hooked in a few paragraphs and then abandoned the reading for days, but something made me want to finish it anyway and it did not disappoint at all as the chapters progressed in keeping me in expectation.
No obstante, fue para mí una lectura bastante difícil de seguir más por razones subjetivas que de todos modos explicaré: hay formas de redacción en ciertos libros que a veces pecan de pseudointelectualismo, y las ideas se entreveran, por lo que hay muchos tecnicismos que al final no transmiten nada. Esta historia no es una de ellas, pero aún así se me hacía extenuante leerla y comprenderla al mismo tiempo, me enganchaba en unos cuantos párrafos y luego abandonaba la lectura por días, pero algo me hizo querer terminarlo de todos modos y no decepcionó en absoluto a medida que avanzaban los capítulos en mantenerme a la expectativa.
It was not a boring book, because from the beginning we enter directly into a current of madness that keeps us in suspense, but I reiterate, I found it difficult to process at the beginning, not to mention the end that left me so confused that I had so many questions and no answers.
No fue un libro aburrido, porque desde sus inicios entramos directos a una corriente de locura que nos mantiene en vilo, pero reitero, me fue difícil de procesar en un comienzo, y ni hablar del final que me dejó tan confundida que tenía tantas preguntas y ninguna respuesta.
I recommend this book to you with the foreknowledge that it will not be a light read, but for its lyrical repertoire, for the fusion of horror and science fiction from a modern yet old genre perspective, and for the way it will be constantly challenging everything you think you understand about it, it is everything it promises to be and more. I won't be rereading it anytime soon because of how I'm still processing it, but I'm certainly glad I've kept it pending on my list. I wish you a happy weekend!
Les recomiendo este libro con el conocimiento de antemano de que no será una lectura ligera, pero que por su repertorio lirical, por la fusión de terror y ciencia ficción desde una perspectiva moderna y al mismo tiempo antigua en el género, y por el modo en el que estará retando de manera constante todo lo que creen comprender de él, es todo lo que promete ser y más. No lo releeré en un futuro cercano por el cómo todavía lo proceso, pero sin dudas estoy encantada de haberlo tenido pendiente en mi lista. ¡Les deseo un feliz fin de semana!
