As a Geography teacher and nature lover, I have dedicated part of my life to study the processes that take place on our planet and to fight with my students for its protection. Now, from my position at the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, I continue to do the same, among other things, to safeguard the planet and nature.
This is a day of reflection and actions to preserve life, which is to preserve the environment. It is true that every day we must fight for its conservation, but, on this date, we must propose to intensify our actions in terms of protection because everything we do is little.
In this publication, the author will talk about five dangers that are "killing" the environment and that, in many cases, the damage is almost irreversible.
Problems that "kill" the environment
With the development of civilization, damage to nature has increased as a result of the excessive exploitation of natural resources. This has led to the emergence of problems that until a few years ago were unnoticeable, but which today have become the focus and attention of several world leaders and have aroused the interest of the majority.
If until a few years ago we talked about air, water and land pollution as the main threats to the environment, others have appeared derived from these or that have appeared due to our mismanagement in terms of development.
What are these problems?
The first thing I want to point out is that these problems cannot be seen separately, because some of them generate negative consequences that derive in other problems or in part of them.
In the author's opinion, these are five problems that are killing life on the planet
- Climate change
This is one of the biggest problems we are facing and has a global effect. This problem generates an increase in temperatures and, consequently, an imbalance in precipitation, floods and other climatic problems.
- Plastic pollution
This has become one of the main problems that affect the environment and that, in less time, has advanced the most. Every day, thousands of plastic objects, bags and other objects of this type end up in the sea, degrading the environment and affecting life in the seas and oceans. Another consequence is the loss of species due to the consumption of these products, confusing them with their traditional food.
- Sound Pollution
The excessive increase of decibels in cities, fundamentally, has become a form of pollution that affects human beings. This is a 21st century pollution that is increasingly predominant in our societies.
- Desertification and drought
The increase of lands that are not fertile, the lack of rain is another of the problems that affect the environment. This problem generates other problems such as the shortage of food and drinking water, which is one of the great demands of the world's population.
- Disappearance of some countries due to rising sea levels.
We are already suffering from this problem. Some islands, especially in Oceania, have ceased to exist due to the excessive rise in sea level. The sad part of this is that, according to predictions, by 2050 many of the lands that are submerged today will cease to exist due to sea level rise as a result of climate change.
A final comment
Many people know that the environment is made up of living organisms, non-living organisms and everything around us. That is the most elementary concept given to elementary school children.
But, in my life, I have seen that the environment goes much further and that this process cannot be divided because it is universal, but we all have a particular environment and it is that little piece in which we live, with which we relate and where we develop.
I say this because many times we think of global actions to protect the environment, without knowing that if we all protect our environment this individual action becomes global and we save a lot.
My call, therefore, is to take care of your environment. To do small actions that protect it and, in this way, you are fighting for its safeguard and care.

Hoy es 5 de junio y en el mundo se celebra el día del Medio Ambiente. Esta fecha se estableció en la Conferencia de Estocolmo en 1972 y se celebró, por primera vez, un año más tarde.
Como profesor de Geografía y amante de la naturaleza he dedicado parte de mi vida a estudiar los procesos que tienen lugar en nuestro planeta y a luchar junto a mis estudiantes por su protección. Ahora, desde mi posición, en el Instituto de Geología y Paleontología sigo haciendo lo mismo en función, entre otras cosas, de la salvaguarda del planeta y la naturaleza.
Este es un día de reflexión y acciones en función de preservar la vida que es preservar el medio ambiente. Es cierto que todos los días debemos luchar por su conservación, pero, en esta fecha, debemos proponernos intensificar las acciones en función de protección porque todo lo que hagamos es poco.

Problemas que “matan” al Medio Ambiente
Con el desarrollo de la civilización se han profundizado los daños hacia la naturaleza, como resultado de la explotación desmedida de los recursos naturales. Esto ha traído consigo que hayan aparecido problemas que hasta hace pocos años eran imperceptibles, pero, a día de hoy han puesto el foco y la atención de varios líderes mundiales y han suscitado el interés de la mayoría.
Si hasta hace pocos se hablaba de contaminación de aire, agua y tierra como las principales amenazas del medio ambiente, han aparecidos otros derivados de estos o que han aparecido por la mala gestión nuestra en función del desarrollo.
¿Cuáles son estos problemas?
Lo primero que quiero señalar es que estos problemas no pueden verse por separados, porque unos generan consecuencias negativas que derivan en otros problemas o en parte de ellos.

•Cambio climático
Este es uno de los mayores problemas que estamos enfrentando y que tiene un efecto global. Este problema genera un incremento de las temperaturas y, por consiguiente, un desequilibrio en las precipitaciones, inundaciones y otros problemas climáticos.
•Contaminación por plástico
Esto se ha vuelto uno de los principales problemas que afectan al medio ambiente y que, en menos tiempo, más ha avanzado. Cada día van a parar, fundamentalmente, al mar, miles de objetos plásticos, bolsas y otros objetos de este tipo que degradan el medio y afectan la vida en los mares y océanos. Otra de las consecuencias que generan es la pérdida de especies por el consumo que estos hacen de ese producto, confundiéndolos con sus alimentos tradicionales.
•Contaminación Sonora
El incremento desmedido de los decibeles en las ciudades, fundamentalmente, se ha convertido en una forma de contaminación que afecta a los seres humanos. Esta es una contaminación del siglo XXI que tiene un predominio cada vez mayor en nuestras sociedades.
•Desertificación y sequía
El incremento de las tierras que no son fértiles, la falta de lluvia es otro de los problemas que afectan al medio ambiente. Este problema genera otros como la escasez de alimentos y de agua potable, que es una de las grandes demandas de la población mundial
•Desaparición de algunos países por el aumento del nivel del mar
Ya este problema lo estamos padeciendo. Algunas islas, sobre todo de Oceanía, han dejado de existir por el incremento desmedido del nivel del mar. Lo triste de esto es que, según predicciones, para el 2050 muchas de las tierras que están sumergidas hoy dejarán de existir por el incremento del nivel del mar, como resultado del cambio climático.
Un comentario final
Muchas personas saben que el medio ambiente está formado por organismos vivos, no vivos y todo lo que nos rodea. Ese es el concepto más elemental que se le da a los niños de primaria.
Pero, en mi paso por la vida, he visto que el medio ambiente va mucho más allá y que este proceso no puede dividirse porque es universal, pero todos tenemos un medio ambiente particular y es ese pedacito en el que vivimos, con el que nos relacionamos y donde nos desarrollamos.
Lo anterior lo digo porque muchas veces pensamos en acciones globales para proteger al Medio Ambiente, sin saber que si todos protegemos nuestro medio ambiente esta acción individual se vuelve global y salvamos mucho.
