A sketcher’s paradise
Capturing textures, perspectives and shadows
We spent three weeks traveling down through Spain, from San Sebastian to the Mediterranean. One can only take so much time for sketching, especially traveling with others. Even so, there are places that call out to you to sketch, and this was one such place in southern Spain. I can still feel the warmth of the sun and the remainder of the morning shadows. In this sketching style I attempt to capture the feeling of the place and to draw the perspectives somewhat accurately. But for the detail of stone, tile, and brick I like to draw a bit of it while leaving areas undrawn, allowing your eye to complete the detail from what I have drawn. You get a sense of the stone walls without needing to see every stone drawn out. The same thinking applies to the color. This sketch is almost overworked with color, while I do still leave areas open and unfinished, such as the brick tower on the far right.
My sketch with watercolor added
This drawing was done using brown permanent ink in a quill pen, so that I could make thicker or thinner lines as I applied pressure to the pen. A great way to avoid monotony of line weight. The watercolor washes were added later.
