I could sketch all day in towns like this. For me there is a kind of magic in these old villages. They evoke a sense of wonder – what old patterns there were to collecting and processing food, how they got news of the outside world, how well they understood their natural surroundings.
This particular dwelling was open as a museum, so we toured the inside seeing their kitchen, bathroom, working spaces and the attic area.
This sketch was done using a quill pen with permanent brown ink, then adding the watercolor washes later. When I sketch like this having the intent of adding color, I try to be mindful of leaving the drawing open more to allow the color to describe things. Otherwise the drawing feels too heavy. I try for a mix of pen detail and colored areas. I also try to suggest colors and textures rather than filling it all in. To me it allows the mind to get a sense of these things without being told every detail. That way the viewer can participate in the piece by mentally completing it.
