A town built in the 12th century

Everything was built of heavy stones.

Our destination was to the old town of Barcos to explore the port wine country, not realizing it was way up high in the hills, and not along the Duoro River. The town is unbelievable, built so long ago using enormous stones for much of it back in the 1100’s. We spent a few days traveling the backroads to see the countryside and other villages and hamlets, and thoroughly loved what we came upon. Some roads are barely wide enough to accommodate a very small car, and we were blocked by a tractor or truck more than once, where the only way out was to back up enough to take another route. There is something warm and inviting in these old places that were made for human foot travel, and mostly built by hand, where everything is original and is suited to the specific needs of the community.
