Knutsford Terrace - A Recommendation from my Auntie

    Hi Everyone,

One evening @sterlingux and I went to Knutsford Terrace, kid free, and it was a recommendation by my Auntie (@livinguktaiwan). It's a place I have never heard of before, nor is it a place you would just naturally come across if you walked by.

Knutsford Terrace is a terrace street in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon in Hong Kong and it's famous for its bars, pubs and restaurants, which I didn't know till my Auntie told me. It's situated on the south slope of Observatory Hill and it's hidden behind all the buildings of Kimberley Road, to access it you have to climb a steep slope / sidewalk.

The terrace is strictly for pedestrians which is lined full of tables and chairs for the restaurants and bars. Each restaurant / bar have promotional persons trying to lure you into their bar / restaurant, especially with the promotion of free drinks.

We ended up getting lured into one of the first bars on the terrace called Port, with the promotion of 3 free shots for each of us if we bought a drink each, it actually ended up being a good lure. It was a really surreal experience, sat on a bar stool, on the terrace, with the towering residential blocks over you that were accessed from the terrace. It made you realise how crowded and populated Hong Kong is.

We looked through the extensive, and expensive, cocktail menu as we are both partial to a good cocktail. Some people may not say these cocktails are expensive but in the UK we can get cocktails as cheap as £5 which equates to roughly HKD$50 as well as a pints being 99p (equating to HKD$9.90) at our big chain pubs. While we were looking they brought us our free shots, but it turned out there was only 2 for each of us, we didn't really complain because they looked like alcohol that teenagers would normally drink.

@sterlingux ended up ordering the Sweet Temptation which had lots of chunks of watermelon within the drink and I went for the Sunshine Sparkle which was just alcoholic enough for me to enjoy it. If you are new here, I have a little girl who is just over 15 months and I've been breastfeeding so I've not had alcohol for a very long time. I also chose that particular drink because I really liked the name of it.

As you can tell we both loved the atmosphere and it was nice for us to be kid free as it doesn't happen often with me being a full time mum at home. But we've loved showing the kids around Hong Kong and we have so much more planned.

Once we had finished our drinks and shots we were about to get the bill when the waitress brought out another round of our drinks that we had previously ordered. We looked at her really confused and said 'we didn't order these', in which she replied, these are your free shots! So, we actually ended up getting 2 drinks as well as 2 shots each for around £30 which turned out it was cheaper than the UK. As you can see, @sterlingux is loving our 'free' drink.

After we had finished all our drinks we decided to head back to the hotel, but we decided to walk the rest of the terrace which turned out to be not as busy. It was a lot quieter the other end but the bars were not as appealing nor was the lively atmosphere there.

The other end of Knutsford Terrace sign isn't as vandalised which makes me assume that it's the less used entrance but it's definitely the prettier entrances of the two because of the fairy lights on the trees. We would definitely recommend having a drink or two on the terrace just to enjoy the atmosphere, you can also ask the waitress to bring you games to play while you drink like cards or a dice game (which I could not understand nor could I understand it when they explained it to me).

    Until next time, stay tuned.
