Difference between Modern and Wild formats in Splinterlands

In Splinterlands, there are two main formats for ranked battles: Wild Ranked Battles and Modern Ranked Battles. While the game mechanics are identical in both formats, the main difference lies in the cards available to play in each.

    Playable Cards in Each Format

1- Wild Format: Allows the use of all cards in the game, including the older ones.

    • Alpha Set: Cards from the Alpha Core set and promo cards.

    • Beta Set: Cards from the Beta Core set, promo cards, rewards, and Essence Orbs miniset.

    • Untamed Set: Cards from the Untamed Core set, promo cards, rewards, and Azmaré Dice miniset.

    • Chaos Legion Set: Cards from the Chaos Legion Core set, promo cards, rewards, and Riftwatchers miniset.

    • Rebellion Set: Cards from the Rebellion set, promos, and rewards (pending minisets).

2- Modern Format: Restricted to cards from the most recent sets, offering a fairer experience for new players.

    • Chaos Legion Set: Cards from the Chaos Legion Core set, promo cards, rewards, and Riftwatchers miniset.

    • Rebellion Set: Cards from the Rebellion set, promos, and rewards (pending minisets).

Both formats allow players to use market filters to view the cards available in each set.

    Card Identification by Frames

Each set of cards in Splinterlands has a unique frame that makes it easy to distinguish between cards. Over time, players will be able to recognize cards at a glance. Cards from Chaos Legion and Rebellion have set icons embedded in their frames.

    Choosing a Battle Format

    • Modern Format: Recommended for players who own or rent newer cards. Since only cards from the most current editions are allowed, there is no need to compete against older cards that may be difficult to obtain. This levels the playing field for new players.

    • Wild Format: Ideal for veteran players with a large collection, including cards from both Alpha and Beta editions. This format allows the use of all cards, providing the opportunity for more complex strategies by having a wide catalog of cards.

Players can switch between both formats freely, choosing the one that best suits their collection and playstyle.

    Rewards

Seasonal rewards can be earned in both Modern and Wild formats, allowing for Glint to be earned in either. Additionally, each format has its own Leaderboard with individual rewards.

    Displaying Player Progress

On in-game screens that display player avatars, the avatar frame will be colored based on the highest league the player is in, either Modern or Wild. For example, if a player is Bronze II in Modern but Silver III in Wild, their frame will be silver. The only exception to this rule is the battle history screen, which will display the frame depending on whether you are viewing Modern or Wild data.
