Perhaps the world of computing is the discipline where units of measurement have grown exaggeratedly in a relatively short time. I remember in my beginnings when data was measured in kilobytes and hard drives did not exist, but neither did the Internet exist, so amounts of data were still manageable.

Basically the problem with DVDs is that they only stored one layer of information while this new technology uses a three-dimensional structure with hundreds of layers in which to store information, up to 1.6 petabytes being packed into a single disk with a thickness of one micrometer. Básicamente el problema de los DVD es que solo almacenaban una capa de información mientras que esta nueva tecnología utiliza una estructura tridimensional con cientos de capas en las que almacenar información, hasta conseguir meter 1,6 petabytes en un solo disco con un grosor de un micrómetro (milésima de milímetro).

Todo esto lograría almacenar en una sola habitación los datos que ahora ocupan un centro de datos como un campo de futbol, pero no solo se ahorra espacio sino que esta tecnología emplea muchísima menos energía para acceder a los datos y por ende menos calor con lo que también se ahorra la energía empleada en refrigeración.
