So this was a weird one for me. It was really hard for me to get into it. The first half of the book is extremely dense and filled with jargon that is never actually explained, which might be interesting for some people, but I really disliked it. I felt like I was constantly grasping at straws, trying to make sense of anything really, and it was not fun or interesting for me.
The world building could be interesting, but it felt completely ignored and overshadowed. I feel like it would have been amazing and rich to the plot to have a better understanding of the planets, the houses, the type of people from each house, the powers each house/planet/people have... all that information was too scattered, it was given almost zero importance and it felt flat, which is a shame. I feel like having more information about each house would have make me feel more connected to each character. It was so hard to figure out who was who, what house they belonged to... Gideon kept calling mayonnaise to someone that I still don't know who was, then changed to a different designation... it was extremely confusing.
Something else that bothered me was the little modern remarks. Gideon quoting Michael Scott just felt so out of place, it gave me the ick.
I did enjoy the ending, and I did liked that Gideon and Harrow didn't really declare their love for each other plainly and explicitly, to me it felt more like a show of respect and I liked that. I also enjoyed that we don't really know if Gideon is alive or dead (or at least I didn't get that). I mean, she didn't die with poison when she was younger, and her body disappeared... Also, in the epilogue, Harrow mentions a voice in her head, but she says that she thinks it is actually her voice, which to me means that Gideon might not have been absorbed.
Howewer... Why on earth didn't we get an explanation about the thousand year old note Gideon found with her name? I mean, I understood that someone had the same name as her, but who? and why did her mother said Gideon 3 times before dying? Was her mother Gideon from thousand of years ago? Is Gideon the daughter of a Lyctor?
I hope this is answered during the next book but honestly it feels like it was a huge thing that was just overlooked and should have been discussed during this book.
Overall, I had a good time after the 50% mark, so for that I gave it 3.5.
