Finland's "Olkiluoto 3" (OL3) power plant 1,2 is a prominent example of issues associated with Nuclear Energy projects:
- it took over 20 years to build;
- it was commissioned 13 years behind schedule; and
- its cost grew over 300% of initial budget.
First outage happened within first year of its operation. 3
Construction of nuclear power plants often exceed budget and take much longer than planned, so that many such projects end up abandoned without completion.
In Quora discussion about possible reasons for that one commenter wrote:
"The ONLY way to get them [nuclear power stations] approved is to lie about the costs and time, then go begging for more money during the very long build." 4
I think such approach is known as "scam".
