Your actions, inactions, and the sum total of the decisions you have made are part of what make you who you are. You also need to know that your life is your absolute responsibility and you should own it. You do not expect everything to be done for you at everytime, you need to take active responsibility for your life. The truth is that you are absolutely in charge of your thoughts, actions, decisions, directions you take, etc. If you want your life to take a new direction, then you need to initiate it yourself.
In building up your life, you are the chief architect. This is the reason you need to be as intentional as possible when dealing with yourself. Just as a farmer, what they sow in the farm will be exactly what they expect a harvest on. Similarly, what you expect from your life will be determined by what what you do with your life - your time, energy, resources, your actions, etc. How you respond and react to the issues of life is entirely your choice and within your control even though you may not have been able to control what led to the issue. A friend once said that "your life is like a bed, you can only lie comfortably on it if you make it comfortable."
In order to take possession and ownership of your life, you need to possess an ownership mentality. What this means is that you need to realign your mentality and your thought pattern to understand that you are solely responsible for the result of your life. When you have this mentality, you will cease to blame someone else or situations or another thing for the things that are happening to you that you do not like, rather you will begin to take responsibility for them. When you have told yourself the truth that your actions and decisions can either lead to your success or failure, then you will not take unwholesome decisions and you will undertake better actions.
It is worthy to note that taking ownership does not mean blaming yourself for what is going wrong as a result of your actions but owning the responsibility so that you can become better. If you take an action, take responsibility for the outcome, and do not be scared to take steps. In fact, it is far better to take wrong step that you will learn something from than not to take any step at all. However, for you to learn from the result of your actions, you have to accept them and not trade blames for them. You should welcome the result of your actions whether good or bad, so that you will be able to improve on them.
Taking possession and ownership of your life leads to success. I have observed that the people who take ownership of their lives tend to be more proactive instead of reactive. That is, being focused majorly on what you want to achieve; on the solution to a problem, not the problem itself. In life, if challenges arise in the course of pursuing after your dream, you need to focus on the dream and the goal, and then look for ways to solve the challenge, not sulking over the problem. If you are someone who is determined to achieve success, you will understand that everything that comes around you, even problem, is an opportunity to achieve it.
When you learn how to take possession and ownership of your life, it will help you to build interpersonal relationship. Of course, it is when you place value on yourself that you can learn how to value others. More so, when you can hold yourself accountable for your words, then you will know how to talk to people with respect. Same thing goes for actions; you will learn how to act goodly. You will also become more empathetic and open to others, and build up more trust when you have learnt how to take ownership of yourself. Remember that how you relate with others is a direct result of how you relate with your own self. That is, a good interpersonal relationship starts from a good intra-personal relationship.
