On Wednesday morning I was up at 5:30AM and got the post up, the kitchen cleaned up and got ready to leave by 7:45AM. I had to go to the barn before I went and there were 2 deer in the back 40. Deer season has started so I was surprised to see them.
My ride picked me up and her gps seemed to be malfunctioning. She thought she knew the way to the school. It was a good thing because I wasn’t aware that The Center School had moved from its second location to this brand new building.
We got there in plenty of time and were soon ushered into the All School meeting room for the morning exercises. My granddaughter participated in the Guess the Drawing part.
After speeches once the kids had gone to their classrooms, we went back to the entryway until the teachers were ready for us in the classrooms.
My granddaughter was just starting a “diary” type book and was deeply engrossed in it. They get to put their current book in a bag to be able to return to it when they can.
The next activity was a math game for addition. Both she and her partner did pretty well at it.
From there they went outside. There was structured game playing with huge hula hoops. They formed 2 lines at each end of the course of hula hoops and hopped from hoop to hoop until they met the person from the other line. Then rock/paper/scissors determined who continued.
While she waited her turn, she played with acorns on the sidewalk.
The next game was ultimate tag where everyone is it and there are certain rules when someone gets tagged. Eventually there were lots of kids sitting and every so often the teacher would call “Everyone up!” and they’d all start running again.
At the end of this game, they lined up and it was time to say goodbye. They went inside, got what they needed from their lockers and moved onto the next activity, which might have been lunch, as it was noontime.
It was very interesting to see how very different these kids were taught from standard public school. All the kids participate in Forest School in kindergarten/first grade. Here’s the link about that. My granddaughter is now in grade 2, the MUPS program and this explains what her day is like.
So it was an interesting but very tiring day and I’m glad I got to see my granddaughter in her new school.
I made lunch when I got home and rested during the afternoon.
On Thursday I have a lot of phone calls to make, more health insurance forms to fill out and to start getting ready for my sister’s visit. My helper friend will be here at noon for the whole afternoon. We intend to give the bathroom a thorough “spring cleaning”, floor to ceiling.
