Going to the Movies with Teenagers: A Survival Guide

in funny •  last month

Going to the movies with teenagers is an experience. Not a fun experience, necessarily, but an experience nonetheless.

First, there’s the ticket negotiation phase. Back in my day, we went to the movies and saw whatever was playing. But my teens? Oh no. They need to check reviews, compare Rotten Tomatoes scores, and debate for hours before finally picking the same action movie they always watch.

Then comes the snack situation. I suggest we stop at the store for reasonably priced candy. They roll their eyes and act like I’m the most embarrassing human alive. Yet the second we step into the theater and they see a small popcorn costs as much as a car payment, they suddenly start whispering, “Do you have any snacks in your purse?” Oh, now I’m useful?

Once we finally sit down, I prepare for two hours of uninterrupted movie magic. That lasts about five minutes before one of them needs to check their phone. They claim they’re just “checking the time,” as if I don’t see the glow of Snapchat illuminating their face.

And let’s not forget the post-movie critique session. Back in my day, you either liked the movie or you didn’t. But no, my kids need to analyze everything. Plot holes, CGI quality, character development. I feel like I just left an advanced film studies course I didn’t sign up for.

So yes, going to the movies with teenagers is an experience. But at the end of the day, I love that they still invite me. Even if it’s just to pay for the tickets.

Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

But next time, I’m bringing my own candy.
