It sure is a pretty fungus; it looks like an exotic flower. I assure you it does not smell like a flower. Go ahead and satisfy your curiosity if you must but be warned that it smells just like a cat turd. I know because I picked up the first one that I ever saw, to give it a sniff. Only after, did i learn that it is categorized as a variety of "stinkhorn." Had i known that i still would have had to know exactly what it smells like, however. And it smells exactly like catpoo..and strong halitosis. Now you know.
It's stink attracts flies who spread it's spores. Interestingly, rather than being connected into the soil by mycelium, they just seem to be floating on the ground. This characteristic seems useful for the distribution of their spores as well. While there are some reported cases of digestive upset and neurological symptoms in dogs who have consumed them, there are no reports of human sickness from their ingestion.
In this part of the world, there is a spectacular variety and abundance of fungi, and a long season for them, so you can expect more mushroom photos from me in the future. Maybe I will share recipes as well, but not for Aseroe rubra.

Lo sé porque cogí el primero que vi para olerlo. Sólo después supe que se clasifica como una variedad de "stinkhorn" en inglés. Ese nombre explica de su olor espantosa... Puedeser "cuerno apestoso". Sin embargo, si lo hubiera sabido, habría tenido que saber exactamente a qué huele. Y huele exactamente a caca de gato... y a fuerte halitosis. Ahora lo sabes.
Su hedor atrae a las moscas que esparcen sus esporas. Curiosamente, en lugar de estar conectados al suelo mediante micelio, simplemente parecen estar flotando en el suelo. Esta característica también parece útil para la distribución de sus esporas. Si bien se han reportado algunos casos de malestar digestivo y síntomas neurológicos en perros que los han consumido, no hay informes de enfermedades humanas por su ingestión.
