You've probably already seen it - the latest hit Netflix show Adolescence, if you haven't watch it, all the hype is thoroughly deserved.
Created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, the later stars alongside Owen Cooper, whose debut performance has blown critics away. I'm already a massive Stephen Graham fan, and he's outdone himself here!
The general plot is that 13 year old Jamie (played by Owen Cooper) is arrested on suspicion of murdering one his female classmates, the first episode is dedicated to his arrest and processing in the police station. Stephen Graham plays Jamie's father, he has a very rough ride throughout the four episodes.
Every episode is one shot, I could hardly believe this when I realised.... literally all the way through, the camera roles and follows the actors around, it's unreal.
Each episode is intense and has its own flavour.
The first episode starts from the perspective on the main DI leading the investigation, episode two follows him and his partner into Jamies' school to find out more about jamie's motives. This is all confusion and it's pretty tense.
There's one seen in this which involves a chase, through a window and then a long arial shot from the school to the memorial for the murdered girl, this all involves handing the camera over and attaching it to a drone while it's still rolling. I love this episode, it's the two DIs trying to interview Jamie's classmates in a very unruly school.
Episode three is just amazing, a few months on, it's simply a discussion between a psychologist and Jamie, unreal acting here, it's all just 95% on the two of them for 50 solid minutes in one take. This is the most tense of the three.
The final episode focuses on the aftermath, the effects on the family, where Stephen Graham comes into his own. The only downside maybe is the final episode is a bit of an anticlimax, it's basically just stress and grief and misery.
But how on earth else was this all gonna end up?
The manosphere and young men...
That's what all this about, so very relevant, but honestly while the subject matter is crucial I think to the story, it's the execution which brings this to life.
Final thoughts...
Honestly, best TV ever>?
