China-linked shipowner denies Taiwan accusation of damaging undersea cable

"The Chinese director of a firm whose vessel Taiwan suspects of having damaged an undersea communications cable said on Wednesday there was no evidence the ship was involved"

--- Convincing denial. If it were a cheap Hollywood crime story, you'd know now who did it.

"In a written statement sent to Reuters late Wednesday, China's Taiwan Affairs Office said globally there were more than 100 such incidents of damage to undersea cables a year and they are "common maritime accidents""

--- 'Hey, there are millions of car accidents every year. So, this was just another accident.' said the driver of the car ploughing through dozens of people...

"The vessel had lingered in the waters just off Taiwan's north since early December until its transmitting signal was turned off on Jan. 3, shipping data showed.
Guo declined to specify why the ship had remained in the area, or the purpose of the voyage, but said the Taiwan authorities had only sought details of its GPS movements.
"I don't understand why there has been so much news about this," Guo said. "The ship had dropped anchor, so it had stopped in the nearby waters.
"We followed the rules and normal procedures. If not, then Taiwan would have investigated and detained us.""

--- Totally normal to turn off the trackers while dropping anchor near undersea data cables. Normal with Chinese characteristics, that is.

China’s social media awash with talk of Sino-US friendship

"a New Year’s Day article from the U.S. Embassy looking back at the bilateral relationship since 1979 suddenly garnered several hundred comments mentioning “Sino-U.S. friendship” instead, suggesting that the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s “public opinion management” system has switched priorities ahead of Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20."

--- Hmm ... The CCP knows how susceptible Trump is to praise, so we will probably see a lot more personal posts directed at his vanity. Whether it works as the CCP intends is another question.

BYD Brazil scandal exposes flaws in Chinese investment

"Using Chinese workers to build the BYD plant is similar to how Chinese multinationals operate in Africa and other Latin American countries, said Paulo Feldmann, an economist and professor at the FIA Business School in Sao Paulo.
The practice brings little benefit to the countries that receive the investment, he told DW.
"For Brazil, it would have been better if these workers had been local, because of the income they would have generated for themselves and their families, the positive impact on their communities and the professional training they would have acquired. It would also be easier to monitor their working conditions,""

--- It is how China works almost everywhere. & because in many cases, local politicians are bribed, Chinese companies usually get away with it. Maybe in Brazil, they bribed the wrong people.

How China's national liquor greased the wheels of corruption among Communist elites

"the image of Moutai has long been tainted as businessmen in China mostly recognize it as a form of “hard currency” used for socializing with those in power."

--- Hard currency particularly to bribe officials. To be fair, that's the best use for this stuff, as it is almost undrinkable.

China swamped with respiratory infections ahead of Lunar New Year travel rush

"A resident of Shanghai who gave only the pseudonym Peng for fear of reprisals said his daughter is still sick with flu-like symptoms after several trips to the hospital.
“It seems there are a whole lot of different viruses going around right now, and even the doctors don’t know what it is,”"

--- Just don't go to the hospital. As it is, the probability is great that you catch another virus while waiting there for treatment of your current one.

China takes aim at Philippine democracy

"China has been stepping up its information operations globally, using the Philippines as a testing ground for tactics designed to propagate anti-American narratives and build pro-Chinese sentiment. Through platforms such as Facebook and TikTok, which many Filipinos rely on for news, Chinese accounts amplify content that casts doubt on Philippine-US relations and erodes social trust within Philippine society."

--- Similar to Russian propaganda efforts in Europe. China will probably do the same there, too.
