Ultimate wooden Catan board

in boardgame •  4 months ago

I wanted to make a wooden Catan board that had everything housed in one box and would fold out to reveal a dice tray and a resource card tray. My brief to my self was to make it feel a bit like the Jumanji board game (beating drums in the distance) , have ornate etched wood and to be eventually handed down to my children if I ever have them. ha.

I started designing the whole thing about a year ago and after lots of mistakes and money I'm happy with the result. I've always liked pigs so I changed Sheep to pigs. Don't hate on me too much hardcore fans. Also pigs are more recognisable as a simple shape, sheep are just clouds with feet mate.

All the tiles and pieces fit neatly in all the compartments. Any other neat freaks out there find this just a bit too satisfying?

Inspired a bit by Conan the Barbarian, Isle of Man flag and Game of Thrones I gave each player a personal Sigil to go with their colour. I always found the robber in the original Catan a bit un imaginative so I created the cheeky robber monkey. Look at him blow his little horn - the cheeky little fella.

All cities and settlements have little dowels so they fit snuggly and securely on the board and player stations.

They all come with little hessian bags too!

    No more messy resource piles!

I created a little Catan poem too, can't really see the beginning from the pic but it reads...

Brave are those who settle in far away lands.
Dark forests, fields of gold and desert sands.
Use your head and this island will provide for thee.
Trade, build and connect our new country.
Prepare for tantrums and pieces on the floor.
Because what's that on the horizon? Oh no.
    It's a road war.

    Development cards

    Inter-changable Ports and #lasercut waves.

These gold dice are hefty and feel pretty nice being thrown down on that black velour surface.
