Hi community!
In an interview with 'Voetbal International' he takes stock of his time at Barça and reflects on "the most difficult period" of his career and his contractual situation.
Frenkie de Jong has given an interview to 'Voetbal International', in which he describes 2024 as "the most difficult period of my career". The Dutchman says that things are getting better and better with his ankle and explains how it is developing.
"At first I was busy day and night with that ankle. As soon as I woke up, I felt it immediately. Has it swollen? Has it responded? Now I've almost lost that feeling. However, the ankle has become something I have to take into account. By this I mean that I will have to continue to pay extra attention to it, in the form of care. One player has it in the knee and I have it in the ankle," he recalls.
During the interview, Frenkie also delves into the whole mental process. “For someone who loves football as much as I do, it seemed like an eternity,” says De Jong. “It was really the most difficult period of my career. I was also away from Ajax for a while, I think it was in 2018. I was on the sidelines during training when it happened. I tried to block a ball and landed badly, tearing the ankle ligament on my other foot. But it was nothing compared to this injury.”
De Jong also spoke about his contract situation, which ends in June 2026, and hinted that he has not yet made a decision. "My contract renewal is a topic for the newspapers here, but it is not for me. I want to play football and then I will see what the club wants to do with me and then I will decide what I want to do, together with my agent and my family," he said.
"People think I want to stay at Barcelona forever because life outside of football is very good here, and it is good, but what happens on the pitch is still less important. If I felt that I could not contribute enough, or if the team could not compete, I would leave."
Frenkie also looks back on his time at Barça and admits that he expected to have won more titles by now. "I have to admit that when I signed for Barcelona I didn't imagine that I would only win one league, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup after four years. I was expecting at least double that, so that disappoints me. Things happen and you can't predict them."
See You soon!
